A Place On The Corner [Slash/PG] by Almostnever

This is something I didn't want to read because John as a baker didn't really grab me, but then I saw it described as being Junk Cheapish in another rec and I adore Junk Cheap, so I checked it out and I loved it. I loved John's quiet pov and his growing affection for Rodney. I loved how Rodney was was endearing past his bluster and I love how John's canon was made use of too. The baker thing totally worked in the end I fancy I rather like this.

A Ribbon at a Time [Slash/NC-17] by The Grrrl

This was lovely. It starts off in the middle of a relationship that's already taking place, with John and Rodney as casual sexual partners before John seems to start yearning for more. It has my favourite kind of John characterization, quiet and aloof, steeped in silent angsting with everything going on under the surface. Really fantastic read.

Blink [Slash/R] by Lavvyan

This fic was mega coooool. Very sci-fi, kind of creepy, very engaging original character point of view (I do love those). Also, anything eye related freaks me out, so this was even creepier than it was probably intended to be. But yeah, I really enjoyed this. With the eye and eeee /shudders/

Into This World Again [Slash/NC-17] by Chelle

This isn't quite an AU story, but it does have Rodney encountering an AU with some pretty significant differences, one of which makes the ending quite bittersweet. Still, it's a lovely long read and I pretty much adored everyone in this story.

Do Over [Slash/NC-17] by Crysothemis

I loved this to bits. It's such a fantastically fun story with Rodney starting off with a curiosity about John's sleeping around to Rodney and John engaging in their own little games. It's one of those stories that will just make you grin from beginning to end.

Feel You Breathe [Slash/PG-13] by Jenn

This is a tag for the episode Outcast and I found this very true to the episode and to Ronon and John. The story is from Ronon's point of view, a very quiet and observant look at the way John deals with the events of the episode. I love it for portraying characters I recognise and excellently using a tone that befits both characters. Fantastic short fic that leaves you aching a little.

Forget Me Not [Slash/R] by Maisierita

I was very wary of reading this because it's a slave fic where John and Rodney have lost their memories and was I sceptical that it could go anywhere new or interesting, but it's a bloody fantastic read. There's something truly horrifying about the nature of brain washing and something brilliant about how these characters can't help but be who they are despite brainwashing. A very satisfying and long read.

Negotiating Shadows [Gen/PG] by Aesc

This is a tag to the episode Be All My Sins Remembered and as much as I love the show with only the odd grievance, this is the scene I would like to have seen on screen. I love the Teyla of this story who manages to be strong and vulnerable at once, who's frustration is easy to see and sympathise with. The John/Teyla interaction here is perfect. Highly recced.

Male Enhancement (The Soul and the Company Store Remix) [R/Slash] by Leah

Ordinairily if someone presented me with a story about John the robot, I'd run in the opposite direction, but this is hands down one of the best stories I've read this year. It draws you in very quickly and then pretty much holds you to it until the end. If you're of a sensitive nature, I really do suggest a packet of Kleenex before you go into this thing. Highly highly recommended. A wonderful AU story.

The Pegasus Tinies [PG/Gen] by Argosy and Kiden

This is just brilliant. It's an Atlantis comic strip based on the stylings of Edward Gorey. It's a peculier mix of touching and darkly humorous poetry and illustrations. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it.

Die Verwandlung [PG/Gen] by Domenika Marzione

I really loved this. Though I loved Conversion, I wasn't much into the fics that followed and I think this has to be my favourite one, touching on what Sheppard's transformation does as a whole rather than just to him, while addressing his experience too. Enjoyed this very much.

Wash Me Away [R/Slash] by Blueflamingo

John goes home for his father's funeral in this story. What I liked was how John sems to move through this story in a very numb and detached manner, a stranger to his own emotions. There's a feeling of absence in this story, of John's relationship with his father, his emotions, his place as a son, his team and Atlantis, setting a very lonely tone. I really liked this. A lovely sensitive and smart piece of writing.

There's No Such Thing As Daniel Jackson [R/Slash] by Eleveninches

So so funny. It's an AU that begins with the events of SG-1's Redemption going very wrong (as in most of North America blown up and nuclear winter wrong), Anubis succeeding to blow up the gate and John ending up working with the survivors of the SGC. It's such a fun story, with an exceptionally dorky John and very funny Rodney, their relationship very slowly and sweetly developing as John deals with visions from the dead Daniel Jackson directing him to Atlantis. It's a long meaty AU, with a lot to of have fun with and really it's perfect for a horrid rainy and grey day. So recced.

There Ain't No Such Thing as a Free Lunch [PG-13/Slash] by Smittywing

This takes place during Adrift and it's a lovely short and sweet piece. I love it because it provides some lovely little nuggets of insight into John's character for a very short story. I love the title too as Rodney taking what he feels he deserves here, which makes his obvious entitlement issue quite funny. Enjoyed this a great deal.

Broaden into Boundless Day [NC-17/Slash] by Thingswithwings

This is an amnesia fic where Rodney tries to piece together the puzzle of his and John's relationship. It's really quite lovely and clever and I don't want to say too much. Instead, I'll say that it's got a lovely quiet tone and is the the right amount of angst for any angsty story (too much and it's melodrama). Recced, definitely.

Ways to Die in the Pegasus Galaxy [Slash/NC-17] by Crysothemis

Such a lovely, warm and sweet story with oblivious John and woobie Rodney (you know, the kind that makes you go 'Oh, Rodney'). I mostly love how in character John and Rodney were and how simple the premise of the story is. It's one of those fics you need to read when you're feeling down and need a good squishy pick me up.

In the Silent Water [Slash/NC-17] by Tigerlady

This takes off where season three ends and is a big 'what if' of a story. What I particularly enjoyed was that it had everything you want from an episode, things like tension and drama and plot and science-fiction with the added bonus of John/Rodney. It's a lovely long read with great character moments and best of all, so very in character. You just hear the voices and see the expressions and the author never misses a beat the whole way through. By far my favorite fic by Tigerlady. Highly recced.

Good Guys Don't Always Wear White [Slash/NC-17] by Nel

This is that wonderful kind of AU which blends both the source and alternate reality seamlessly to create an engaging and exciting story. Here the Atlantis characters are placed in a mutant-verse, fusing Atlantis with X-Men. I love the choice of mutations given to the characters and how they're so fitting and how the characters are very much themselves despite the setting of the story. Also, there's action, there's tension and there's much more to the John/Rodney dynamic here than just their attraction. Wonderful read.

In the City of Seven Walls [Slash/NC-17] by Auburn

What I love about this story is that it's so big and grand. It throws out colours at you when you read it, reds and golds and other opulent images and sensations. For me the draw isn't McKay and Sheppard in the story, but the the writing itself. There is so much in here to be uncomfortable about, so much to walk away from, but the strength of the writing pulls you back and compels you to keep reading, making you hope and hate while you fidget through the whole thing. In a predictably emotionally stunted fashion, whenever I try to compliment this story it comes off sounding like I really hated it, but the truth is that I love this story for all the negative emotions that it stirs in the reader. You really feel for the main characters and that can only be the result of skilful writing.

Cross My Heart [Slash/NC-17] by Chelle

The thing I love about this story is that unlike the popular method of demonising a female character in order to subvert text, the author here actually allows you to sympathise with Katie Brown, exploring what might just happen if Rodney was in a relationship with her, while carrying on an affair with John. I think it's a very sensitive and thoughtful piece of work, which I really enjoyed.

Junk Cheap [Slash/R] by Devil Doll

Oh, fic, how much do I love thee? In theory, I should hate this fic. It's an AU, without Atlantis, or a gate or any general Sci-Fi element, yet, pwnd! John owns a junk shop, Rodney is a professor and the fic follows these two men beginning a relationship and moving around the warm waters of domesticity. It's like those movies you have to watch in bed with tea and biscuits. So warming and soothing. Much love.

The Spaces in Between [Slash/NC-17] by Luthien

It's hard to explain why I like this fic so much. It felt so different to so many of the fics I've read in this fandom. It's probably John (as you can see I'm still trying to figure out the fic love). I loved the author laying bare these layers of John, showing us bits of his life, these little bits that made him the man he is. Very thoughtful, insightful and engrossing. One of the finer post-Common Ground fics. It's a good story with great momentum, carries you right along to the The End. Read it.

It Doesn't Matter Who Buys This Material: It Will End Up in the Hands of Your Children [Slash/R] by Glitterandlube

I love this fic. I read this and must have laughed out every five minutes. It manages to be consistently funny, never really letting you stop laughing long enough to realise how silly it is or questioning the credibility of the situations. It's comedy gold and I have the feeling this author is going to keep getting better and better, funnier and funnier and then she'll probably hit us with some ace drama.

Complementary Colors [Slash/R] by Yin

This is an AU where Rodney is an artist and John his muse. Mostly the fic works because the characters remain very close to their Atlantis characterisations. However, the star of the fic is the role of artist as driven by need and falling in love with his muse. John as the object of Rodney's art is just a wonderful read, especially for a Sheppard fan I guess. I dunno, there were just so many layers I was able to enjoy with this fic that I'm still not entirely sure why I love it so much. Definitely read this.

Exile [Slash/R] by Victoria Custor

This takes place in the Retrograde universe, which John and Cameron going off to a bar, getting drunk, having a fruitlessfumble and then making up for it in the morning. It's very short and not much happens, but the characterisations are spot on, John's sense of alieness on Earth is wonderful and the small momements that do take place in the fic make you want to read it a couple of times. Good stuff, like all of Custor's work.

Friendly Competition [Gen/PG] by Siegeofangels

This is set after The Return II where a simple competition begins after a small typical Elizabeth hug. It's one of those warm, feel good stories where everyone's a little goofy and silly and you end up smiling in a similarly goofy and silly way. If you're feeling down, definitely have a read of this. It will cheer you right up.

Straight as a Circle [Slash/NC-17] by Toomuchplor

This fic has such a simple premise. What if John Sheppard woke up straight? It's very much like those fics where X character wakes up gay, only completely different because everything changes for Sheppard and he learns what life is without one missing component. The John/Rodney relationship here is fantastic. Great read. Very fresh and clever.

The Life You Lead [Slash/NC-17] by The Grrrl

This is what I like about The Grrl. She can take a cliche and write it so you'll want to read a story you may have read a million times. The amnesia trope is a popular one and John and Rodney have probably lost their memory numerous times, but it's worth reading one more to see John uprooted without his memory, feeling like a guy that's in the wrong place. Not only that, Grrrl writes John and Rodney with a warmth and understanding that always shines through in her fic. Great read.

Intimacy of Man (Sex John Sheppard Never Had) [Slash/Het/NC-17] by M

Four postcard pictures of John, the first one warm and sad, the second one sexy and light, the third one hot and daring and the last one? Kind of creepy and dark. I love M's writing style, the way she portrays John, oddly vulnerable and alone until the very last lines of the last ficlet. Some great writing.

Never Second Best [Slash/PG-13] by Auburn

This fic is apparently a follow up to Auburn's contribution to Surfacing, but can be read even if you haven't read the zine. It feels like a nicely self-contained John/Rodney piece, both of them in a very domestic setting, very tender and affectionate. Very warm and enjoyable story.

This Gun's For Hire [Slash/R] by Helen

This is a story I enjoyed a great deal. I like the fics that kind of start from the middle and then just escalate from there on. This story is very much about John working out his issues, getting to a place where he can go after what he wants. There's a lot of awkwardness on the way, some places that hurt, some places that make you laugh. Most importantly, I felt very immersed the whole way through. Definitely worth a read.

Spirit Dance [Gen/PG] by Sholio

This is incredibly fun. It's a mission report by John with comments from his team and from Elizabeth. There are scribbles in the margins and overall juvenile scribblings as well as the mission report itself, which has images and some funny Sheppard observations. It will definitely put a smile on your face.

Golden Boy [Slash/R] by Chopchica

This story is about five times John wanted to come out. I adore this because I have a special interest in the John Sheppard who is quiet and intense, who keeps his issues locked up inside. In this fic we get five gut punches of his struggle with his secret. The best thing about the fic is that it has the same quietness about it that I think John has. Lovely.

Like This [Slash/PG-13] by Aria

I think there are lots of ways an author can write John, depending on what you like most (the dork, the soldier, the quiet intense guy) and I do love the fics that go for matter of fact thinker John, the minimalist narratives where the authors skate around his emotions the way he would. I thought this piece was very John and I'm a sucker for a good John story.

Le Beau En Stasis [Slash/PG-13] by Rachael Sabotini

This is another fic I didn't expect to like because I saw the words 'fairy tale' and thought, no. However, the author uses character traits or certain bits of canon, incorporating them and fusing them into this fairy tale deftly to create a very funny story that will make you snicker every sixty seconds. It's brilliant how the story is so far out there yet has characters we can recognise. Also, it's a SG-1/SGA crossover and has the best Jack ever.

And I Am There [Slash/PG-13] by Tigerlady

I usually don't read AUs where the characters are too far removed from their original setting, but I enjoyed this a tremendous amount. It's an Atlantis/Stigmata fusion. If you've seen the movie, read the fic because it's very atmospheric and has some solid writing. If you haven't seen the movie, like me, even better because you will enjoy it even more. Your enjoyment might depend on how much you're willing to believe these characters in X setting, but I found this to be a cracking good and well worth the time I spent reading it.

The Towers On The Heights Reach To Heav'n's Own Blue [Gen/R] by Minervacat

I don't know how to describe this fic. It's certainly a rarity in that I have never read a fanfic like this before. It's John and Cameron Mitchel sending each other e-mails where they mock each other like any good devoted sports fan might. I'm not a sports fan, but I am a fan of the sports fan and this fic is like those movies where sports is the microscope used to zoom in on how silly people can be. It's a great crossover, it's very funny and it's like one of those really cool feel good movies. This is a keeper for those days you need an upper.

The Only Word of Love [Gen/PG-13] by Mirabile Dictu

This is a very short piece so it's ridiculous not to read it and find out why it rocks. I like it because I find it very rare for someone to write something short, yet with substance. This fic captures loss, grief, sadness in very few words. If you don't feel the gut punch at the end then you are dead inside ;-p

The Jenny Code [Gen/R] by Domenika Marzione

I read this way after it was first posted and I clearly recall the praise the story recieved. I initially thought, no way, I bet it's not that good. Well, it's not. It's way better. The story has a clean writing style with crisp description and a wonderful grasp of the characters. Marzione also writes a great Lorne and if you're a Lorne fan, this is that one fic you need to have read.

Vanrin's Story [Slash/PG-13] by Victoria Custer

Hunting Parties is one of my top ten favorites in SGA fandom and I think I could read a million stories set in this universe. Vanrin's Story is the author's remix of Hunting Parties. If you haven't already it, read this first, it'll be fun. Vanrin is an OC and a great one at that and I loved reading his pov here, especially what he thought of John. Vanrin's a gentle character that radiates a lot of warmth and strength and seeing his thought processes was interesting. I loved this.

What I Look For On the Sides of Mountains [Gen/PG-13] by Jenn

From the way the story begins, I had no idea it was going to go where it did. I'm not generally about the cute and the beginning is that, which didn't prepare me for something that very suddenly turns a little angsty. Angst and cute aside, what this fic is really about is how the team knows Sheppard. specifically Teyla and Rodney. They've been through something before and they know how John will react, but they also know how to deal with it. Oddly, you ache for Sheppard a bit, but then realise he's okay because he has his team. Much love.

The Principle of Exclusion [Slash/NC-17] by Jenn

This story is set in the Mensa verse, so-called because of stuff in McKay and Mrs Miller. Essentially, the story is about the John and Rodney of an AU where John is not military, but is a jerk, is incredibly smart and extremely complicated, whereas Rodney is much more laid back, but equally complex. The story follows their highs and huge lows as they negotiate their way through their feelings. I adore this fic because it's as close as perfect to the best Mensa verse fic I've been waiting to read. Even if you haven't seen the episode, read it as an AU because it works wonderfully

The Next Few Lines [Het/Slash/NC-17] by Chelle

I love stories that explore John's emotions, or his reluctance to share feelings. I think of some of us find that it makes him oddly vulnerable, this insistence that he should remain strong, not feeling self-pity or needing sympathy. I think Chelle gets it across wonderfully in this fic, his shying away from being comforted. Or at least, shying away from one person and gravitating towards another. Nicely done.

Mr. Fantastic and Einstein's Wife [Slash/15] by Glitterandlube

I have a love hate relatonship with AUs. If I love one, it makes me want to read more. If I hate one, I hate them all. This particular one made me get in the mood for AUs again. It's set in the Moebius AU, which you'll know of if you've seen Stargate SG-1. It's the dorkverse where Sam and Daniel are amazingly adorable and Rodney wears bad sweaters. Only, Bunny has thrown Dr. Sheppard into the mix, a dork amongst dorks. It will make you laugh and grin. Read this.

Sleepwalker [Gen/PG-13] by Nixa Jane

I loved this to pieces. It was short, almost too short and it was incredibly creepy. I loved the slow reveal of what was happening and the way John and Rodney never really caught on. Especially the way John felt off-balance, unable to explain what was wrong with him. Very cool story. More like this please.

Unusual Attitude [Slash/R] by Mirabile Dictu

It's getting harder and harder to be bowled over by SGA fic because there seems to have been so much fic written in such a short time in this now quite large fandom. So, I was so happy to find this because not only did it reel me in, but it kept me hooked to the end. I really felt the emotions John was going through here, one scene touching me in particular with how disconnected he felt. The author wrote a John that I see and believe and, yeah, just read this right away.

Classified, aka Wanted [Slash/NC-17] by Toomuchplor

It's becoming harder and harder to rec fics because the fics are many, which means more often than not, you feel as though you've read it before. I loved this one because it was very funny, with great character interactions and a funny little plot. I'm not sure how that made it feel different from all the other fics, but enjoyed it a lot.

Missed the Saturday Dance [Slash/NC-17] by Zoetrope

The fic itself is a simple AU that puts John and Rodney in a WWII setting. The thing I loved about the story was the use of multimedia to flesh it out. This includes radio trailers, a visual trailer, artwork, letters, stock footage. It's made perfect use of the internet to produce a project rather than just a piece of writing. Very cool.

I Might And You Might [Slash/NC-17] by Minervacat

I do like a good Cameron/Sheppard fic, but I've never really read one I completely believed or liked. This one is set during the episode The Pegasus Project and I really liked the chemistry here and the fact that we get to see how distinctly different these two flyboys are and how similar. Plus, omg hot.

Failsafes [Slash/PG-13] by Luna

This is undoubtedly my favorite story from the 'Dark Side' challenge over at sga_flashfic. I love fics with time loops or time travel of any kind. The humorous take is always fun, but I enjoy the darker aspect of having to relive the same moment again and again, not knowing how many days/months a character might have spent on this hamster wheel. This device is used brilliantly here, tapping into the more unsettling side of re-living the same moments.

Home Fires Burning [Slash/NC-17] by Shusu

I can't go into too much detail about this fic because it would ruin the pretty clever premise of the story. What I will say is that I really enjoyed it and the ending left me very satisfied in the way a nice good long read does. Also, I really loved the whole concept.

As Lost As You Get [Slash/R] by Lily

I loved this story. It's a slight AU of the episode Epiphany, where it takes a little longer for Sheppard and co to get out of the time dilated dome. My favorite thing about this story is Rodney's frustration with the situation, especially Sheppard's behaviour. However, even more, I liked how it made me rethink the episode and how Sheppard must have endured his stay on the planet. Very engrossing fic which I enjoyed a great deal.

Burnout [Slash/PG] by Victoria Custer

The first rec of the season is a coda to No Man's Land. Without being spoilery, I'll say it perfectly fits the mood of the episode, but you may want to read Custor's Hunting Parties too (though the coda can stand alone). I love the characterisations and scenario and I'm glad this is the first fic I've read to kick off the season. Very satisfying read.

Recs made during S2

A Broader Mark for Sorrow [Slash/R] by Destina

This is a very quiet story, which is fitting because it's all about Ronon. We get backstory, we get to see the depth of his character and the way he changes. It's also a Sheppard/Ronon fic and though I'm not partial to the pairing, I can see it. I think the pairing is written fantastically here. I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.

Your Cowboy Days Are Over (Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys) [Gen/NC-17] by M

Gen and John-centric, this is the kind of story you start reading and you don't stop until the end. I really enjoyed the character interactions here, the plot, the world-building and how the story managed to pack in moments that were sad, funny and one that was downright chilling. It's an immensely enjoyable story that sucks you in, chews you up and spits you out. Do give it a read even if it doesn't cater to your OTPs or reading preferences.

Deflection [Gen/PG-13] by Martha Wilson

Martha Wilson, fantastic as ever. Much like the other fics by this author, I really enjoyed this a great deal. I love how I never know where the author is going with something and when it gets there, it's always worth the wait. Also, I pimped this to my friend and asked her, "Dude, why haven't I recced this, because I totally love it," and she said, "Dude, rec it!!" So, yeah, you should read this because my friend Nel says so ;-)

Tangible [Slash/R] by Chelle

Back to Basics Challenge: This story made me laugh so many times. John and Rodney are trapped and rescued byElizabeth and Teyla. The genius of the fic lies in the different approaches taken to the situation. Also, I adored what Chelle did with Elizabeth and Teyla in this. I promise this fic will leave you grinning.

Polyphony [Het/PG] by The Grrrl

Back to Basics Challenge: This is a Radek/Elizabeth fic and it's very gentle, very sweet and funny. I absolutely adore Radek in this fic and I think he's very much the guy we see on the show. There were also playful hints about John and Rodney's relationship in this fic, which was like the cherry on top of a very sweet fic.

Fault Tolerance [Slash/PG-13] by Rachael Sabotini

Back to Basics Challenge: Though I love the character of Radek Zelenka, I'm not much of a Rodney/Radek shipper, so it's only now and then that a story will work for me. This one manages to be sweet, charming, funny as well as really capturing the chemistry between Radek and Rodney. Really enjoyed this.

Synaesthesia [Gen/PG-13] by Alyse

Back to Basics Challenge: I've read a few post Conversion fics and though I can't remember the bad ones, I'm certain this is the best one I've read. There's real dangerous tension about John in this as he comes down from the effects of the retrovirus and some really good team moments that keep you hooked until the end.

A History of Knives [Gen/PG-13] by Niannah

Back to Basics Challenge: This one is from Ronon's point of view. It's quiet and subtle, yet painting a very vivid picture of Ronon's thoughts and surprisingly, of John too. You don't have to squint very hard to see the slash element either ;-)

Time Cannot Benumb These Feelings [Slash/R] by Pouncer

Back to Basics Challenge: This was my favorite contribution to the challenge. The characters voices were perfect and the story could easily be an episode. This story had all those elements that make you watch the show in the first place.

Tannhauser Gate [Slash/PG-13] by Trinityofone

She's such a prolific writer that I keep expecting the next fic to prove that she can't possibly keep level of creativity going, but I was proved wrong again and this fic completely blew me away. It's a great leap of imagination and I found it believable. And once you believe it, it's pretty creepy and fucked up, which is why the story works extremely well. Great piece of writing.

A New Refutation of Time [Slash/NC-17] by Yin

Written for stargateanon, I didn't know the author's identity when I read this, not that it makes any differerence because it's a very, very cool story, taking a good old sci-fi idea and marrying it with good old literary inspiration. Definitely read this. More from this author please.

Strangerverse [Slash/Various] by Jenn

It's John and Rodney together, but not John and Rodney from the same 'verse. Two people that essentially know each other, but at the same time don't know each other and worse of all have lost each other. Brilliant idea. I love the John and Rodney characterisations in these ficlet and the weird sense of loss, despite both characters being present. Great stuff.

The Bellerophon Brothers [Slash/NC-17] by Trinityofone

This is a sequel to Four Quarters, a very AU AU-fic where team Sheppard are a rock band. There are points that parallel the Atlantis universe, but otherwise I don't really see the Four Quarters characters as the same as the Atlantis ones. However, I enjoyed both these stories a lot, especially this one. There are small hints of the characters we recognise as well as the lure of new ones in a very interesting and engrossing universe.

Recovery [Gen/PG-13] by Martha Wilson

This is the sequel to Retrograde and what I love about this story is that Martha Wilson captures all the voices and throws in buckets of plot with drama and action. Admittedly, I don't read much gen, but this author is turning out to be one of favorite gen authors and her fics never disappoint.

Flying Low at Night [Het/R] by Cofax

This is a Farscape/Atlantis crossover in which John Sheppard meets Aeryn Sun. It feels very much like a FS fic, even from John's point of view. It's like the angst of two universes thrown into one and I felt sorry for both Aeryn and John in this. If you like both shows, you'll love this.

The Ratio of Burning [Slash/NC-17] by Stillane

This is a perfect story. I always find that with 99% of all the fics I read and even rec, there's always something in the story that I might not like or wish never happened. Then there's the 1% of fiction that it perfect start to finish. This is one of the stories.

The Roads Never Lead Where They're Supposed to Go [Slash/NC-17] by Eleveninches

In this AU Sheppard is a scientist instead of military and like Teamwork, this is one of my favorite AU fics. Anyone can change Sheppard's vocation in an AU, but not everyone can make it believable. Thanks to the snark and John's dorkiness, this is still very much him. Very funny fic.

Whisper Softness in Chambers [Het/NC-17] by Pouncer

Fics like this one remind me why I love the show; so many good ships, so many great characters. I especially love a well written Ronon/Weir story and Pouncer is spot on with characterization. Also, hot het fic is a rare thing, I find.

No Small Resistance [Slash/NC-17] by Quettaser

I really liked this one; totally my kind of story. It's quiet, thoughtful and very Rodney as he thinks over this thing he has with John. Also, the author got the characterisations across perfectly, which doesn't always happen in such short pieces. John hardly says anything in this, yet, I found myself thinking, yes, totally him. Don't pass this one up.

Artistry in Chaos [Slash/NC-17] by CGB

This is another fic written for The Atlantis Urban Legend Slash Challenge. Any story that writes a good John pov is fine by me. I really enjoyed this, with John catloguing coincidences with a sense of things being too good to be true, or just plain odd. Very cool fic.

Stockholm Syndrome (Tearing Down the House) [Slash/PG-13] by Mousewitchy

I really enjoyed this fic. It's Rodney on a different planet and under the illusion that the Atlanteans have left him behind. It's a great insight into his point of view on the whole situation as he breaks it all down and tries to make sense of things. Very engrossing and well written.

Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose [Slash/PG] by Synecdochic

Every now and then, you will read a story that seems to project way more emotion than is in the actual text. It's this thing where the author writes with restraint, but the reader is still able to feel the impact of what's being held back. This is one of those stories. Great storytelling.

Your Inevitable Unhappy Ending [Slash/NC-17] by Helen

This is one of those fics where I didn't really share the interpretation of the characters, yet, I really enjoyed the story. I loved the build up of John's feelings towards Rodney as well as the misunderstandings between them. On top of that, the fic takes place in an Atlantis cut off from Earth, which I love. It's a good, long and meaty read. I'd highly recommend it.

Distraction [Slash/R] by Lacey McBain

This fic is my favorite of The Atlantis Urban Legend Slash Challenge. It's not horror, but the author used her challenge prompt brilliantly. I loved the plot, loved the John/Rodney relationship and mostly I just loved the sci-fi element and the fact that this could have very easily been an actual episode, just like the two stories recommended below.

Living Conditions [Slash/R] by Minnow

Another fic for The Atlantis Urban Legend Slash Challenge. As ever, Minnow has the ability to blow you away through very quiet and exact prose. I love how she wrote such a sad, human story around a rather horrible urban legend. I always find her characterizations spot on and this fic was no different. Fantastic.

Silence Implying Sound [Slash/R] by Trinityofone

This fic was written for the The Atlantis Urban Legend Slash Challenge and it's a definite winner. I found the horror element just right and deliciously creepy. It has a great plot and characterizations and the ending is perfect. Don't pass this one up. It's really written in the spirit of an urban legend.

Survival [Slash/PG15] by Anna

I absolutely love this story. It's a John/Rodney fic from Ronon's point of view and it's written in this gorgeous, sparse style that I adore. I love the look into Ronon's thought processes and especially the way Sheppard comes across. Short, yet very insightful. Shiny.

Hunting Parties [Slash/NC-17] by Victoria Custer

I enjoyed this a great deal. Almost as much as Moka. It's very much a John fic, with him being abducted by raiders and his team then having to search for him while he takes refuge with his rescuers. It's a good long and meaty read with great original characters and good characterization all around. Enjoyed this a lot. Check out the sequel Foreign Affairs too.

After [Gen/R] by Maisierita

John is lost on a mission and the fic is from Rodney's point of view over a period of time that elapses after the mission. I loved the pacing and the emotion of the fic, the way Rodney seems to know what might have gone on in Sheppard's mind, especially after the events of Epiphany. Loved the writing style too.

Romancing Rodney [Slash/PG13] by Msgordo

Absolutely hilarious. Ronon likes Rodney and needs help in wooing him. I can't believe that Ronon is so close in characterization to canon Ronon, yet had me laughing all over the place. The funniest character is Sheppard, the way he just can't believe what's going on. It's such a pick-me-up fic.

They're Advertising in the Skies For People Like Us [Slash/NC-17] by Kel

I absolutely adore this story. John and Rodney end up in a parallel universe and meet their other versions. The brilliance of the fic is to see the lost potential of Sheppard and the different place Atlantis would be without him as the military leader. I think this fic is a perfect extrapolation of what could have happened if Sumner had lived. I also love John and Rodney's relationship in this, the way it's almost on the periphery of the story.

Linguistics [Slash/NC-17] by Stillane

Love this one. It ties beautifully into canon, has great characterization. It's beautifully paced, with Rodney learning the language that is John and perhaps teaching John how to speak a different language too, one that doesn't require hiding from how he feels. Yeah, this one hit all the spots for me. Really worth reading.

Moka [Slash/PG] by Martha

One of the best SGA fics I've ever read. This was utterly engrossing and it's not often I read something that makes me stop to gasp because of an OMG! moment. If you read this, when you reach that moment, you will literally just freeze in realization. It's one of those fics that make you want to talk about fic and wish you'd written it. Fine writing. Do not pass this fic over.

Realm of Dryads [Gen/PG] by Trinityofone

Trinityofone is disgustingly talented. She's written this story around a picture for a challenge and the result is something that's not only quite creepy, but utterly beautiful. It's a short piece, but it really grabbed me.

Revelations [Slash/PG] by Stillane

This is a post-Epiphany John/Rodney fic. Angsty and slightly hurty. I liked the relationship Stillane shows here and the way the issue of trust/faith is brought up. It's short (too short!) but a very satisfying read.

Trust in Salvation [Gen/R] by Kyrdwyn

The thing that really knocked me on my arse about this fic is the fact that it's oddly believable. It's a dark look at what Sheppard could very easily be because of his ability to remain quite mysterious. That laid back charm could hide something way more sinister and I loved that implication. Great fic. Definitely worth checking out.

Missing/Inaction [Slash/PG-13] by Crysothemis

This is a post-Epiphany John/Ronon fic. This is the kind of slash I really enjoy. Ronon's feelings are obvious whereas Sheppard's are more veiled, which I find very in character. It manages to be sexy even as a PG-13 rated fic and the overall tone is wonderfully quiet and restrained. I really loved this one.

Cakes & Ale [Slash/NC-17] by Mirabile Dictu

This is one of those fics where you see snapshots from the life of the SGA crew and the developing relationship of John and Rodney. There an extremely hilarious scene in there as well as one that I found quite touching. A very cool and enjoyable fic.

The Opposite of Reality [Slash/PG] by Glitterandlube

I really liked this one because it made me laugh out loud a few times and it's kind of sweet and very funny. There are many ways that John can have a freak-out over his sexuality, but I found this one the most amusing. Especially with the kind of support Ronon gives.

Guardian [Slash/PG-13] by Dianann

Best Grace Under Pressure tag out there. I've read a few, but this was my favorite one. There's some lovely Rodney backstory here and I found it quite a touching read.

Close Encounters [Slash/NC-17] by Amireal

The author describes this as crack and I'd have to disagree because I found this to be quite a lovely little piece. It's starts with Rodney's admission that he may have a crush on John and it slowly builds from there. It's well paced with good voices and as ever, Amireal puts out a good fic.

Flawed [Slash/NC-17] by CGB

Over Christmas, there was a SGA Santa challenge, where people posted fics anonymously. There was a lot of good stuff, but one fic stood out the most for me and it was this one. It's a great insight into Rodney and also the narration had an amount of emotional minimalism that I really appreciate. Loved this.

Habituation [Slash/NC-17] by Bone

This is post-Epiphany fic. I do love Bone's Ronon/Shep fics and I have to say that so far she's been the only one that's maintained my interest in this pairing. She really sticks close to the canon characterizations and works with chemistry there. I love this episode tag because it fits perfectly with the episode, highlighting Ronon's sense of loyalty and protective streak. Not to mention how hot he is for Sheppard ;-)

Things You Never Did [Slash/PG] by Godofwine

It's not often that you'll find a fic that hits you square in the chest and leaves you quite breathless in the way that Things You Never Did will. The whole story reads like a eulogy and really generates this amazing sense of loss. Added to that was my fixation with Sheppard as the man meant to die and this fic just left me feeling quite raw. Amazing story. To skip this story would be a real shame.

A Little Bit Crazy [Slash/NC-17] by The Grrrl

This is post-The Seige III fic that takes place on Earth, so some time before Intruder. Writing and reading dorky John is fun, but there's a greater joy in reading about the more conflicted John and the guy who keeps things close to the heart. I really felt that The Grrrl took that melancholic feel John had about him in Intruder and ran with it here perfectly. It's a great John/Rodney fic, but it's John that really shines here - for me anyway.

Quarks, Quantum Chromodynamics and Other Unproven Theories [Slash/NC-17] by Amireal

Love this fic. Hate this writer. Love this fic. Hate this writer. LOVE this fic. HATE this writer. If you're looking for a John/Rodney slash fic, with a good strong sci-fi plot, then this is the one for you. I absolutely loved every single word of this story. Not only is it a great read, but it's a good sci-fi fic and a wonderful slash fic. Without spoiling too much, I'll just say it involves time travel and is utterly engrossing. Read slowly and read carefully and you'll love it. Scout's honor ;-)

Place Your Hand [Slash/NC-17] by Chelle

I avoid all fics that have a mention of rape like the plague. I went ahead and read this fic because Chelle's stories never disappoint and neither did this. She took the subject matter and dealt with it in a very sensitive and thoughtful manner, showing what I felt were realistic pressures on John and Rodney's relationship. There's a lot of emotion and no fix it, which is something I appreciate in a story. I'm still not very comfortable with reading a fic that deals with this subject, but I think Chelle wrote a good story and it is definitely worth reading.

Shadowing the Surface [Slash/NC-17] by Tigerlady

If I had to choose one word to describe this fic, it would be HOT. Written for a challenge on SGA_flashfic, this story is about John and Rodney seizing the moment. It's short, yet it manages to be funny, intimate and OMG!HOT, while still managing a little undercurrent of angst. I *adore* this story, I really do and I shamelessly admit that's it's all about the OMG!HOTness. Don't walk, run.

Retrograde [Gen/PG-13] by Martha Wilson

I admit that since John/Rodney took over my brain, I don't read as much gen or het as I could (and should, damn it!), but every now and then there's a gen fic that really hits the spot. Retrograde is one of these fics. It's a SGA/SG-1 crossover with plot, action and great voices throughout. The pacing is excellent and there's the kind of high drama that makes you remember why you watch these shows in the first place. Good stuff, definitely the good stuff.

Visiting Hours [Slash/NC-17] by Lily

The plot has Sheppard imprisoned and Rodney being the only visitor he can recieve while incarcerated. I absolutely adore this story. The author shows John go from his laid back self to becoming sick of a being prisoner and I found her portrayal of this change very believable (as seen through Rodney's eyes), as well as the way Rodney reacts to the situation. There's a nice amount of tension under everything all the way through the story and it really holds you attention to the end. Definitely worth reading if you already haven't. Definitely one of the better fics out there.

Don't Tell [Slash/NC-17] by Jenn

Lovely, smiley, happy fic. Rodney asks John to marry him (just go with it, man) and John spends a lot of time thinking 'wtf?'. It's sweet, funny, silly and has a lot of laugh out loud moments, particularly one with Caldwell that just made me lose it. Fantastically funny fic. Very enjoyable.

Falter [Gen/PG] by Minnow

This is just beautiful. It's four small snippets that pack such a huge punch and without saying much not only give us a sense of the character's emotions, but also the way they are towards each other. The Rodney and John snippets really do get you. There's a slow, gentle build up and you just don't expect that heavy, sad thump in your gut when you get to the end. Brilliantly done.

Camera Obscura [Slash/NC-17] by CGB

It's Christmas in Atlantis and because it's Atlantis, it's not a conventional Christmas. It's not a conventional Christmas fic either, which is great because I'm not so hot on those. The characters discuss past Christmases and in the midst of the celebrations, John and Rodney start what might be their own tradition. I really enjoyed this with the minor characters getting their moments too and the light layer of angst under John and Rodney's getting together. Nice one.

Care in the Holding [Slash/R] by Lacey Mcbain

Very good fic. There is something that happens in this story that I would find completely unbelievable under any circumstance, no matter how dark a fic. However, somehow, when I got to that part, I found myself holding my breath and thinking 'oh shit' instead of hitting the back button and scoffing. The truth of it is that the story slowly builds up the tension and emotion of the bond between John and Rodney and it really pays off by the time you get to that moment. Very cool piece of writing.

Eight Ways John and Rodney Gave Themselves Away [Slash/PG] by Trinityofone

Love, love, love this. It's obviously one of those 'five ways' fics and as the title suggests, this one focuses on the fives ways that John and Rodney's relationship gets discovered. I loved the numerous ways that people in Atlantis find out from certain things/situations. The concept is simple, but for some reason the fic generates a lot of warmth, seeing them from the eyes of others as they figure it out. Very cool.

Coping Mechanisms [Slash/NC-17] by Amireal

I adore this story, I really do. Stories that bring the Sheppard love are the ones I especially like and this one is one of those top of the pile fics. There's an accident and John finds out how Rodney feels about him, only he can't act on it because of his job. From there we see him struggling with what he wants and he knows he can't have. The thing that summed it up for me was a scene where they know that in a perfect world, they wouldn't have to worry about kissing and being found out, whereas in their current situation, they can only work around the complications. It's not a perfect world, but it's something they can still work with. Total adoration for this fic.

Thirst [Slash/NC-17] by Resonant

It's all about wanting something and denying yourself it and the way Resonant shows Rodney making that connection, making him see that this is what Sheppard is doing, it's just a brilliant moment. And then what follows, John's reluctance to take and his defensive denial and eventual acceptance - serious guhness. Loffed, absolutely loffed this fic.

Skirting The Issue [Het/Slash/NC-17] by Bone

I promised myself that I would not read another gender-bender, but I love Bone's John/Ronon fics and the fact that fic is a missing scene from It Stops Being Funny At Skirts pretty much sealed the deal. It's woman!John/Ronon and it's probably one of the hottest het fics, which is weird, because it's also a very a hot slash fic. I seriously love this one and it really compliments It Stops Being Funny At Skirts . Yes, highly recced and lots of fun.

It Stops Being Funny At Skirts [Het/Slash/R] by Madelyn

I am not a fan of gender-bending fics. It just doesn't do it for me. Admittedly, I have myself written something of this variety a while back, but it was all about the boob jokes, man. However, I love It Stops Being Funny At Skirts because, seriously, it did not stop being funny at all. This fic is very very funny and though I went in prepared to hate it because it's not my thing, I finished it and have read it a few times since. It never stops being funny. Highly recced.

Something More [Slash/NC-17] by Jenn

I've read this fic a few times now and I couldn't understand what drew me to it beyond one reading. I think it comes down to the fact that I really enjoy Jenn's writing of Sheppard. She really gets across the emotionally controlled man, someone who veils what's going on in his head and deals with things his way. Also, right until the end, the fic really had me quite emotionally wound up. There's a very palpable tension throughout and I have to love a fic that can do that.

Coming Soon to a Galaxy Near You! [Slash/R] by Trinityofone

This one made me laugh a lot. I won't go into the specifics, but something starts taking over in Atlantis, the way it spreads on Earth and there's an insanely plausible (in the context of the fic, because, yes, with the insane) reason why. The humor is just brilliant. It's a very unique idea and the fic is brilliantly funny all the way through. This is one of my favorite funny fics in the fandom.

Handout [Slash/NC-17] by Lily

It's a post Lost Boys fic, which the author says came about when her and a pal decided to make Sheppard cry. I am not of the crying fetish, because I just don't see it or believe it in some characters, so I roll my eyes and think 'pah'. However, I read on because a 'bunch of other stuff' is also promised. I should really pull my head out of my ass and try reading fics before judging them like Ms Judgy McJudgy because this was a fantastic story, with this little moment that was just utter perfection and until that moment, I really couldn't believe that Sheppard had done what he had. Fantastic read.

Teamwork [Slash/NC-17] by Majus Minor and Methaya

Of late, there's been an explosion of AU fic in this fandom and the one I really wanted to write/read was where we would have Dr. John Sheppard meeting a Major Rodney McKay. What these authors did was give us Dr. Sheppard and Rodney as a Mountie and part of a team that also has Beckett and Cadman. The story moves at a gentle, comfortable place, letting us watch this team as they gel together. It's a John/Rodney fic too, which is great, but if it hadn't been, I still would have loved it. I had a lot of fun reading this.

The Homecoming King [Het/PG] by Plumunited

Another Lost Boys fic and I *adore* this one. It's a very short Lorne/Weir piece and the author's characterization of Lorne was just perfect. You could totally see it and the fic itself is incredibly adorable. I had instant love for this fic.

Savoring the Distraction [Slash/NC-17] by Chelle and The Grrrl

Chelle and The Grrrl have written something which is sweet, funny and teh hawt. It's one of those fics that bring a grin to your face. Lots of fun (and sex, don't forget the sex). Keep this one aside for when you're feeling glum, it'll do wonders. To think that one blue shirt was all it took ;-)

Touch [Slash/R] by Shalott

Rodney is doing something he's not aware of and John is letting him get away with it. Then it turns out there may be a reason why he's letting Rodney get away with it. It's a simple and sweet John/Rodney fic and I especially liked John in this, the way he tries to get around the whole 'thing'. Lovely.

Hobby [Gen/PG] by Teaphile

Written for the Food Challenge over at SGA Flashfic, this fic uses a minor character to great effect. I especially like this fic because it's my favorite minor character, Kate Heightmeyer. It's a sweet, short fic where our other favorite characters also get a mention. Really, read it. It'll make you grin.

Catharsis [Gen/PG] by Tigs

My favorite het pairing, which will never happen in canon, is Teyla/Rodney. There's never been enough onscreen interaction to suggest things might go the UST or porn way, but they do seem to have a certain chemistry that suggests theirs would be a sweet relationship. For me, these are the elements this fic picks up on. There's a certain shyness on Rodney's part, but also a willingness to put himself out there. You could see it as simple friendship fic, but I think there was a little more and I really liked it.

Isolation [Slash/NC-17] by Kharessa

This is another missing scene from Lost Boys (it was inevitable that this episode would launch a thousand fics). This fic is like Breathless, but walking a much finer line. In this one, Sheppard is in the precarious position of keeping Rodney together, but losing something of himself in the process. It's a very unsettling read, but I liked that it made me that uneasy over the whole issue of John's level of consent.

Breathless [Slash/NC-17] by The Grrrl

This is a Lost Boys missing scene, so if you haven't seen that episode and don't want to be spoiled, don't read this rec. I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this fic because it's a scenario that could very easily head towards non-con (but it doesn't - there's just a moment where I thought *meep*). There are control issues, there's John!angst and Rodney!desperation and the end result is a very satisfying read.

The Big Bang and Everything After [Het/PG-13] by CGB

I didn't think a Firefly/Atlantis crossover could ever work, let alone a Rodney/River story, but CGB artfully crosses over both universes as she brings Rodney into the Firefly 'verse. This is a fantastic piece from beginning to end. One of the most refreshing and engaging reads out there. I can't rec it high enough.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves [Slash/R] by Smitty

Another Search and Seizure Challenge fic. This is by far my favorite one from the challenge and it's just one of the most fun stories I've ever read. Rodney has a pet and in a prank gone wrong, the pet disappears and chaos ensues. Along with that, there's a parallel story involving a similar prank in John's younger years, involving mascot stealing and his first encounter with Major Lorne. If you're a Lorne fan, a John/Rodney fan and just enjoy a good SGA fic, you won't be disappointed. So much fun.

Typical Day [Gen/PG-13] by Martha Wilson

Written for SGA Flashfic's Search and Seizure Challenge, this is short, sweet and funny and the character voices are just right. I like how even in a pretty serious situation, the humor really shone through. Some great lines, especially one by Ford that sums up what can happen in a typical day. Cool fic. I'm going to be reading a lot of this author's work in the future.

Refraction [Gen/PG-13] by Martha Wilson

I was glad I stumbled across this fic because I don't actively go searching for good gen as my brain is so pickled by the John/Rodney stuff out there. I really liked the quantum mirror reality the author created in this fic, which was suitably darker and creepier than the SGA reality we see. The AU characters were believable as products of their universe and of the changes that led to them being the way they were. Very cool story.

Fighting Chance [Slash/R] by Jane

This is a missing scene from the episode The Lost Boys, so I can't go into too much detail without spoiling. What I can say is that if you've seen the episode and feel like a John/Rodney fic, this was my favorite of the fics that sprouted from that episode. I especially liked Rodney in this.

Brilliance (the So Jealous remix) [Slash/NC-17] by Zeelee

This fic is a remix of The Grrrl's Yes, Yes, A Thousand Times Yes, which is just one of my all time favorites ever. I couldn't ever imagine someone writing a remix that would do the original justice, but Zeelee does exactly that. This was probably my favorite remix story. Re-read Yes, Yes, A Thousand Times Yes and then have a read of Zeelee's remix. You won't be disappointed.

#435, The Atlantis Local Stitch'n'Bitch Chapter [Slash/R] by Pru

To be brutally honest, I really have no interest in reading about knitting antics in the city of Atlantis, so I kind of went in all snooty nosed and prepared to dislike, but the story is extremely funny and charming. Especially Rodney's exclusion from the knitting group of Atlantis - that was just hilarious, as was John's role in the whole 'thing'. Very funny and very enjoyable read.

Phantom Limb [Slash/NC-17] by CGB

This is one of those weird fics that I know I like, but I can't pinpoint exactly why. I really don't go for post-Atlantis fics where the Atlantis crew are back on Earth and getting on with their lives, but this fic really worked for me. I really liked the John/Rodney characterisations and the build up towards their sexual involvement with each other. A nice layering of angst too, never too overwhelming or over the top. It's a engaging fic.

On A Clear Day (You Can See Frustration) [Gen/PG-13] by Teaphile

I loved this fic. Instead of writing a Harlequin type romance story, Teaphile wrote this wonderful piece with some Ronon/Rodney interaction. Ronon doesn't know what Harlequin romances are - that's the simple plot. I won't say more and ruin it because it's just wonderfully perfect. This was my favorite of all the fics from the challenge. Inventive, funny and sweet.

Also check out the cover after you've read the fic. Very funny ;-)

Six Variations on a Theme [Het/Slash/Gen] by Minnow

I love the Five Ways theme , or however many ways the author chooses. It's the thought of many possibilites or universes where different scenarios are playing out that really appeals to me. Minnow has written this fic for the Harlequin Challenge, offering us six possible stories. Love this author, love her work. Read this story.

Harlequin Challenge [Het/Slash/Gen] by Various

The Harlequin Challenge is probably the msot popular challenge that SGA Flashfic has had so far - they've archived about one hundred fics and spawned a community for Atlantis fic based on the kind of stories you'd find in Harlequin/Mills and Boons romances. There are so many stories that you'll definitely find something you like. It's like AUpalooza.

Chord Progression [Het UST/PG] by Little Red

I was hoping for a lot of post-Conversion fic, but I don't think I actually found the kind of fic I wanted. So, I was surprised that my favorite of the post-Conversion fics turned out to be a Sheppard/Weir fic. There's probably only a handful fics that make me see Sheppard/Weir, and this is one of them. It's a nice short angsty piece and definitely worth reading.

Down From Mt. Olympus [Slash/NC-17] by Trinityofone

I loved this fic. I'm not partial to fic that explores John's background because I suppose I like that he's a mystery, but this story provided plausible insight that gives believable reasons for why John is as closed off as he is. It's written in a very cool way, interspersed with moments or a moment he's spent with Chaya, looking for the one thing that alludes him maybe? You'll know what I'm talking about when you read it. Fantastic fic, beautifully understated.

Instantaneous [Slash/NC-17] by Cimorene

I really love this fic. Not only does it have a very cool plot, a very sci-fi plot, but the John/Rodney interaction and characterisations are pretty cool. My favorite element of the story is being able to see John's attraction to Rodney, because I'm not sure we see it that often and in an entirely believable way. Great fic. Definitely one of my favorites.

Lingual [Slash/NC-17] by Nestra

From the first moment I saw Ronon and Rodney together, I wanted fic and as soon as I read this fic, I knew this was the fic I wanted. This story is just so them and it's funny, silly and hot. Some might think that Ronon/Rodney is not a pairing that would work. Those people are not watching the same show as me and haven't read this fic ;-)

Acclimation (Eight Days) [Slash/PG] by Bone

When you finish this fic, you'll go back to check the rating and wonder why it's not a 'R' rated fic and then you'll realize that somehow you've just read the hottest Ronon/John fic, that actually had no 'R' material in it. I can only assume the author must be really good. This fic has Ronon's first days on Atlantis as he takes it all in and familiarizes himself. There's also John, whom he likes. You'd think it wouldn't make much of a story, but I can't even begin to tell you how much ass it kicks.

This is fic is my favorite piece of the Revelation series. I also really enjoyed the follow ups in the series, Distraction and Protection. Good stuff.

Bruises [Slash/NC-17] by Coreopsis

This is a post-Condemned John/Rodney fic. They're bruised and tired and horny. This results in hot, sweet pornz. Only, it's good pornz because there are issues to work around because of a smidgen of angst that gives the fic that right kick. Loved it. It's a good look inside John's head, which is always appreciated by this Shep groupie.

Every Planet We Reach Is Dead (Four Ways John and Elizabeth Almost Make It) [Het/NC-17] by Dirty Diana

This was just excellent. There wasn't a single thing in this fic that I didn't absolutely love. She had John and Elizabeth's voices down so well, I could hear them, see them and feel for them. It's angsty, but not in a clubbing you over the head kind of way. And the end, that last paragraph just totally had me. Just beautiful.

What I See [Het/NC-17] by Miera

Being a slash perv, I don't often indulge in the het!porn, but I honestly do love this story. It's an AU of the episode Duet and has Elizabeth occupying John's mind. This leads to all kinds of exploration //suggesting waggling of eyebrows// It's a lot of fun to read and extremely enjoyable.

Five Men Who Never Wanted Teyla Emmagen [Gen/PG-13] by Tielan

Absolutely adore this story. It's written from the povs of the men, which gives us a very cool rounded picture of Teyla. All five character pieces are spot on and nail the voices perfectly and I especially loved Rodney's point of view because it showed a very strong-willed Teyla. Any good fic to do with Teyla is all right by me.

It's also an interesting mirror to Five Men Teyla Emmagen Was Never Attracted To by Tigerlady , which I think I recced a while back, also a fantastic story.

The Last Walk Home [Slash/PG] by Auburn

I'm getting pretty sick of reccing Auburn. She's revoltingly good. Her handle on the characters is just brilliant. I don't even bother to check if her fics are gen or slash. Seriously, just read them. Screw what your taste might be because you won't be disappointed. This fic is no exception. It's an Apocafic, it has John and Rodney and that's all you need to know. You'll love it, I promise.

Dramatis Personae [Slash/R] by Nel

Let's see. Leather. Eyeliner. John. Rodney. And teh hawt. It's one of those fics where aliens make them do something, which in my opinion is even better than what the aliens usually make them do. Anyway, the end result is sexin, but with a dollop of John realizing many things about Rodney and being proved wrong about them at the same time. The hot pornos aside, the fic was a great John and Rodney story and I especially loved the way it was structured.

Rosebud [Slash/R] by Auburn

Sad, sad, sad fic. I can't say too much about it without spoiling the story, but I'd suggest that you don't pass up a good story just because you might blub at the end of it (you big sissy). The cool Citizen Kane reference alone makes this worth reading, the rest of it is engrossing and delightfully heartbreaking. I'd say read it even if it makes you sad, because it's better than reading something that doesn't make you feel anything. Make sure you check out this fic's mirror story, Up Into The Silence

Taking One For The Team [Slash/R] by Kylie Lee

I don't often venture beyond John and Rodney fics as I'm fast becoming an OTPer (ewww), but Kylie Lee is one of those authors that are pretty much good at whatever pairing they choose to write. I didn't expect to be disappointed by this fic and I was right. It's a very cool Duet fic that takes off at a tangent from the episode ending and goes AU. At the risk of spoiling anyone that hasn't seen the episode, I'll just say it's a great fic with Rodney and Carson's voices just right and one of the hottest fic kisses ever.

Zelenka's Still [Gen/R] by Auburn

This is possibly my favorite gen fic in this fandom. It's just line after line of hilarity. If you like screwball comedy, then you'll find this fic very enjoyable and entertaining. John and Rodney are heaps of fun in this and though this fic has them as more of a double act than they even are on the show, I just couldn't find fault with the story. It's incredibly fun and I'll be keeping this for when I need a good laugh. Loved it.

Neither an Ocelot Nor a Raccoon Be [Slash/PG-13] by Basingstoke

Funny, funny, funny. The author has the banter down, she has the snark and there are some brilliant lines in this fic that are very characteristic of John and Rodney. What's the premise? John and Rodney, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G. I had a lot of fun reading this one.

Like Running Through Water [Slash/PG-13] by Jenn

I really don't go for the fics that begin in Antarctica, for some reason I just can't believe that's where John and Rodney started bonding or whatever, however, this is one of those rare fics that really worked for me. Once again, it's the characterization of John that I really adore. It's one of the few fics which I can read and say, yes, that is the John Sheppard I see. Loved this.

Instructional [Gen/PG-13] by Jenn

I love a good gen fic that is both fun and in character, and this is one of those fics. It has the scientists in a turf war with the new military personnel, only in geek style. Though I really enjoyed Rodney and Zelenka, and the way one of the new guys couldn't understand how the scientists are allowed to get away with their pranks, it was John that I liked the most. I think this was one of my favorite John point of view fics that I've read.

Da capo [Slash/NC-17] by Sin

This was a very cool fic. If you like John and Rodney, you're definitely going to like this for the slashy slashy. However, I loved the way she structured the fic, which was very cool and worked very well. NC-17 fics start looking the same after you've read a few bajillion of them, so it was nice to see a fic that was not only incredibly hot, but also different and original in composition.

AS [Slash/R] by Frostfire

It's a short John and Rodney fic, which is funny and sweet. The summary says 'John and Rodney are guys', which I think some do need reminding on occasion, and in the fic it leads to a misunderstanding of sorts because guys are guys and not terribly bright. It's fun and it's short and I really enjoyed it.

How Not To Make A Light Bulb [Slash/NC-17] by Leah K

Rodney is in complete snark mode in this story and John's characterization is closer to early season, which is always endearing. The story is just so much fun to read. It has some great lines and it's my favorite kind of fic; where they don't get on with each other for most of the story. Lot's of snark and great lines. I really enjoyed Rodney in this story and I loved them becoming the focus of alien porn. Such a fun, fun, fun, story.

Inside the Mind of an Air Force Major [Het/PG-13] by Noelle

Despite the fact that I 1) don't really see John willing to get his head shrunk, unless forced to and 2) don't really go for the Sheppard/Weir pairing, I read this fic because of the lure of Sheppard/Teyla. I have to say I was surprised by how much I did enjoy this fic. I think the author really captured Sheppard and Weir's voices and the story itself was engaging and enjoyable (especially if you're a Weir/Sheppard shipper).

Care Packages [Gen/PG-15] by Auburn & Eretria

This fic is a little crossoverish because it also brings in characters from Stargate SG-1, but it's mostly to do with the people of Atlantis getting packages from home. It's a lovely story, which I really, really enjoyed. It's one of those fics that will leave you smiling.

Terra Firma [Slash/NC-17] by Sin

This is another fic where we see John and Rodney visiting Earth and I do love reading these fics and the variations on them. I really loved this one with its sense of Earth seeming a little alien and the way John and Rodney end up together, the way they get there. It's a very cool story. Very subtle, which I loved.

Gifts Unasked For [Het/Slash/NC-17] by Tigerlady

I don't like threesomes at all. They just don't appeal to me, but I'm reccing this fic because there's a lot that I really like about it. Yes, the sexin was hawt, but it's not the reason I like the fic. I liked it for certain character moments and insights. I especially loved Ford in this story even though he plays a smaller role than John/Rodney/Teyla. Also, this was written before the episode Intruder, but there's a moment that happens both in the fic and the episode, which was a very cool collision of fic and TV. It's a good, long and character driven piece and it's definitely worth the time spent reading.

Silk Tree [Slash/PG-13] by Tigerlady

I'm not much of a Weir/Teyla fan. I can see Weir with Rodney, Carson, Zelenka or Kate, but not Teyla (in the same way, I can see Sheppard with Teyla, Rodney and Ford, but not anyone else). However, I really liked this story because there's a very quiet tone to it, a certain gentleness and I found it oddly fitting for the pairing, making it work. I definitely like this one.

Where Is Thy Victory [Gen/R] by Zeelee

What if the Wraith win? What if the SGA crew end up in the hands of the Wraith? In this short piece, that's what's happened and we have Rodney and Sheppard waiting to die. It's a dark little story and I found it a very cool read. More dark stuff like this, I say.

Operation Think Of Atlantis [Slash/NC-17] by Livia

I pretty much got bored of aliens making them do it a while back because, seriously, why? This fic though, I enjoyed very much. I was mostly attracted by the snark and there's a lot of funny, funny lines in there, which made me laff. Also, there's a certain twist that really made me kind of cringe and laugh at the same time, because talk about awkward moments ;-)

Day Break [Slash/NC-17] by Giddygeek

It's Groundhog day! John keeps re-experiencing the same day and Rodney has to fix it. Simple premise. A lot of fun. It's an enjoyable and relaxing read with some really funny lines. Also, I love it when you get the old sci-fi plots worked into a slash fic, like the day repeating itself. Although, I'd love to see Rodney experiencing Groundhog Day because it would be even funnier.

Such Is The Way To The Stars [Slash/PG-13] by Otter

This is a John/Rodney story by Otter and it's one of those fics that are light-hearted and fun and leave you feeling nice and warm. As ever, Otter nails the characterizations and we get that perfect John/Rodney interaction; snarky, funny and very enjoyable. This one goes in my 'I'm a miserable git today' folders, because it's definitely a mood lifter.

The Southern Lights [Gen/PG] by Otter

Otter should write more Radek/Rodney. I think out of all the Radek/Rodney fics I've read, this one is my favorite. She has such a great handle on these characters, especially Radek. She totally nails their smarts and their snark and the chemistry between the two characters. And there's two lines in the story that especially made me laugh out, after which I read the story with a huge grin. I have some serious love for this fic.

Sacrificial Drift [Slash/R] by Auburn

My god, this story is good. It's a sequel to A Taste of Apple and it's twice as good as the first one. This one is a John/Rodney fic, but with the events of the previous fic still weighing on the team. John and Rodney get involved with each other and we see exactly what impact it has on them, especially on John. This is one of those fics that will hit you square in the chest, over and over. It provokes a real response. The characterizations were great, but it was the deft weaving of plot and human fragility that really got me. Oh, fucking excellent story.

Galaxy of the Living Dead [Slash/PG-13] by Karen McFadyyon [NO LONGER AVAILABLE]

This is a very funny, funny, story. John and Rodney as potential zombies is funny enough, but the fic is written from Carson's point of view, which makes it even funnier. Add to that the original character of Biro, who can't wait to get John and Rodney under the microscope, and you have a very entertaining and charming little story. I loved this.

Cold Hands, Warm Heart [Slash/NC-17] by Teand

The scenario of being trapped somewhere and ending up having sex has been written so many time, as well as the having sex to keep warm scenario. But Teand's characterizations are spot on, her writing is funny, and she doesn't forget her own set-up that if they're stuck in a cold place, it's cold everywhere. It's also an incredibly hot fic ;-)

And Sometimes You Get Toasters [Slash/PG-13] by Giddygeek

I absolutely adore this story. There are so many funny bits lines and the characterizations are done well, with Rodney on top snark and John as the dry, smartass. It's really one of those feel good fics, something to cheer you up and make you laugh. Lovely.

Still Water [Slash/NC-17] by Rachael Sabotini

The thing that is making me love this fandom is that so many writers from other fandoms that I used to read are turning up here. I first discovered Rachael Sabotini at the beginning of my fannish addiction and I think I pretty much read all of her Highlander fics. This John/Rodney fic reminded me why I loved her HL stuff so much. It's full on slash fic, but it has characters that you recognize, believe in and sympathize with. This fic has that nice touch of human drama. Good pornos too ;-)

Exigencies [Gen/PG-13] by Rivier

Absolutely adored this fic. She calls it the Psycho!Shep fic, but to be honest, he wasn't as psycho as he was single-minded and focused, which is what made John pretty intimidating in this fic. The fic is written from the point of view of an OC and it works brilliantly to see John and Rodney for the first time, through the eyes of someone that doesn't know them. It really adds to the tension of the story. There's enough sub-text to make it slash, yet, it remains very Gen. Gripping stuff. Loved this.

Face Value [Slash/R] by Minnow

Anything written by Minnow is worth reading, that I am sure of. I do believe she was the first writer that got me hooked into this fandom with her Seven Ways John Sheppard Goes Home. She's mostly written Gen and I have secretly wished she would write some slash and here it is. It's John/Rodney fic and it's set around Rodney becoming telepathic because of a device made by the Ancients. The John/Rodney was fantastic, especially the moment where it all comes to fruition and as I expected so was her usual flair for characterization. What I really adored was the nature of the device that made Rodney telepathic. Very cool and very sci-fi. Also, they are so true to character it's amazing. Fantastic story.

Of Two Hours [Slashy/PG-13] by Tigs

Though the fic has a touch of McShep, it's very much a story about Radek. I love the look into his mind that Tigs gives us. It's a funny little story, showing us a funny little man with a very interesting mind. And she completely nails his character too, which I always find amazing because Radek is one character I find hard to write. A great Radek Zelenka story. You'll finish it with a smile on your face.

Number 51 [Slash/PG-13] by Tigs

The premise is simple. John Sheppard has many faces, but Rodney is the only one that gets to see every single on of them. On the surface, it's kind of silly, the notion that Rodney has a list of John's faces and talks it over with Zelenka. Under the surface, it's a really sweet story that doesn't get too sappy because there is potential for sap. Instead, it touches you just right and gives you a nice happy feeling. Bookmark this for those bad days ;-)

Equate [Slash/NC-17] by Rivier

What I particularly like about this story is the insight into Rodney's thought processes, the way he sets about figuring out what this thing is that he has with John Sheppard. Rivier creates the sense that Rodney is trying to unravel the mystery of this 'thing' and break it down to an equation, something he can understand, something quantifiable perhaps. I loved this fic to bits.

The Silent Art of Watching [Het/Slash/NC-17] by Tafkar

This is not just a great fanfic, it's a brilliant piece of intelligent, sensitive writing. It's dark and has disturbing elements and yet, you totally buy the situation presented to you. It's an OT3 fic that involves Rodney, Teyla and John and I'd like to further explain it, but any spoilers would ruin the amazing, gut-wrenching intensity of the story (though the title is a big hint). This fic will probably remain in my all time favorites as long as I'm in this fandom.

Thirteen Days [Het/Slash/PG] by Dirty Diana

This fic takes place after the Atlantis programme is closed down and we see where Shep, Weir and Rodney moving on. It's an OT3 fic and I am not a big fan of the OT3 at all, but it works here and it works incredibly well. The characters and their voices are just right, the situation completely believable. This is definitely one of my favorites.

Necessary Things [Gen/PG] by Minnow

I've liked everything that Minnow's written so far, but for me, this fic is what proves that she is possibly the best Gen writer in this fandom. She has everyone so true to character, especially Rodney from whose POV the story is written. It's funny, sad, poignant and touching. I find it very clever too, written around the concept of necessary things, or a certain thing. Just brilliant. Probably my favorite Gen piece.

The Taste of Apples [Gen/PG] by Auburn

Great Gen fic. It had everything you want in a good story. There's plot, characterization, action and it's completely absorbing. It's a nice long read too. What I liked the most was that all the characters were well rounded and given attention. The Rodney/John friendship was great and very much like the show. It was great seeing Ford and Teyla get some attention. The best thing of all was Sheppard's characterization. I think the author painted a very realistic portrait of him. Great story.

Finding the Fine Print [Slash/PG] by Giddygeek

I loved the premise of the fic, which I won't reveal because it'll be worth it if you read it yourself. The John/Rodney characterizations were great in this fic and the whole thing was just very sweet, funny, enjoyable and entertaining. Definitely worth a read.

Learning To Breathe [Gen/PG] by Speranza

One of my favorite Atlantis musings is John's connection with the city. It may turn out to be nothing in the end, wishful thinking on the part of fen, but I do wish there were more John/Atlantis fics out there. This fic is brilliantly creepy, showing us John merging with the city and kind of losing himself to it. It's short, which is probably why it packs such a punch. Very cool fic.

Abstain [Slash/NC-17] by Resonant

Clever, clever, clever. This is an 'Aliens made them not do it' story. Think John/Rodney, locked in a room and presented with the challenge to not have sex. Of course, they think it'll be simple enough. That's the story, right there and as a result of the premise, the fic is probably a hundred times more scorching than fics where aliens makes them have sex. I really loved this one.

Letters [Slash/NC-17] by Kylie Lee

So, Kylie Lee doesn't even like this pairing, yet, she writes this story, which is true to character and the best kind of John/Rodney fic. Not just that, but the concept of letters that she uses was just so brilliant. It really tickles your brain, the way the John/Rodney relationship unfolds. Oh, and lest I forget, it's a post-Sanctuary fic and you know I love those ;-)

Mousetrap [Slash/PG] by Miss Pamela [currently offline]

After John/Rodney, Radek/Rodney is the pairing that I really love. This fic is very short, but it's funny and sweet and leaves you with a stupid grin when you finish reading it. Bookmark this for reading on a day when you need a pick me up because it'll put a smile on your face. And that last line? So very Rodney.

Great Expectations [Slash/NC-17] by Teand

Teand is one of my favorite SG authors who has an amazing knack for humor, yet staying true to the character voices. So, when she finally dipped a toe into this fandom, I must admit, my squee was pretty loud. In this fic she messes with a 'Aliens made them do it' concept. It's very funny. It's very John/Rodney. You will love this fic. Especially Rodney. You will *adore* him.

Seven Circles Twisting [Slashy/NC-17] by Mz. B. Stone

This was written for the Darkness Challenge and Brighid puts the concept to good use. The story itself is pretty dark as we see Shep, Rodney, Ford and Teyla return from a mission, looking pretty fucked up. It's like a horror fic in the best way possible, where the reader is left to imagine the worst. It's one of my favorites from the challenge.

Mating Rituals [Slash/R] by Karen Mcfadyyon [NO LONGER AVAILABLE]

It's simple really. Penguins. She turns Rodney and John into penguins. How could you not read that and love it? It's funny and oddly sweet because you shouldn't really be awwwing over penguin slash, but that's what you end up doing. Seriously, read it. It's hella funny ;-)

About a Lamp [Slash/NC-17] by Flambeau

This one is probably in my top five SGA John/Rodney fics. Such a great fic. There was plot, action, slash and it was just one of the most entertaining stories I'd ever read. The premise of the fic was also wonderful. What I particularly liked was the way the author structured the fic, giving us a glimpse of every night with Rodney, which I just loved. Yep, I really, really enjoyed this one.

Flying Blind [Gen/PG] by Minnow

I admit that I mostly read John/Rodney slash, but every now and then someone will write a cracking Gen fic that reminds me what I'm missing. This is one of those fics. It's smart. The characterizations are perfect. The story itself is very cool, especially the way she gives Ford more control and takes it way from John, leaving him to rely on his friends. Very good story.

Opposition of the Stars [Slash/PG-13] by Kagey Girl

This fic is just amazing. It's wonderfully poignant and brilliantly realistic. If there was ever going to be canon slash, this is exactly how it would look. I could see this happening completely. It will never happen on the show of course, but it's the nearest thing. I think it's quite possible that Kagey Girl is probably the best author of this fandom, because she certainly has the best grasp of these characters.

A Better Fate [Slash/NC-17] by Chelle

When the fic begins and I read that John was taking Rodney to visit his parents, my worry was that either the parents would be awful or they'd be too nice. Instead, you have a great fic where John and Rodney are recovering from a horrible ordeal and connecting with each other on a different level, while they both heal in the safe haven of John's parent's house. This is one of those fics you'll read more than once. Chelle really bowled me over with this fic and left me quite awed at her story-telling prowess.

Once More, With Feeling [Slash/NC-17] by Miss Pamela [currently offline]

Ah yes, this is an author I'd like to see write faster and post more often. I enjoyed her fic Souvenir so much, that it's still there in my head, clear as the first time I read it. Again, I absolutely loved this story and though she writes great sexin, I enjoyed it mostly for the John/Rodney interaction and characterization. Great story too.

The Speed of Light [Slash/NC-17] by Resonant

The fic being totally worth the read for the hot smut aside, I loved this story mostly for the look into Rodney's thought process, which was very funny and very Rodney. Also, any fic that uses the word 'debauched' to describe John is fine by me.

Absurdity Theory [Slash/NC-17] by Julad

Another very entertaining and funny story. It's Rodney/Zelenka who are turned incomprehensible to everyone else on Atlantis. The result is some very funny ficcing with many memorable moments.

In-N-Out [Slash/NC-17] by Barkeep

Very fun, geeky and entertaining fic where there is discussion over the food missed by the Atlanteans. Followed by John/Rodney smut, which is always a good thing. Like I said, a lot of fun. Elizabeth being wistful about tofu is especially funny ;-)

Aftershocks [Slash/NC-17] by Shalott

I liked this one *a lot*. It takes place after The Eye and touches on the aftermath of what happened in that episode. What I particularly liked was the flashbacks of moments of torture from Shep's past and how he still feels the aftershocks years after.

Five Men Teyla Emmagen Was Never Attracted To [Het UST/PG] by Tigerlady

This fic is by far my favorite Teyla fic. I love the look into her head and her attraction to the men she's thinking about. Also, the author takes the 'Five Things' concept and weaves it into the fic flawlessly instead of having five separate stories. Some brilliant moments in the story too. There's a John/Rodney moment, but it's far from my favorite moment, which says a lot about this fic because I am *so* about the John/Rodney.

Immovable Force [Slash/NC-17] by Nel

Very angsty and very intense fic. The thing about John Sheppard is that you get this sense of something bubbling under the surface, just waiting to explode and take everyone with it (or maybe I just like to think that). This fic has the control slip away from him and though it begins as fury, it ends up as Shep taking comfort in Rodney (even though he's the one that pushes Shep towards losing control). Very intense fic, especially the NC-17 part. Brilliant stuff.

Layover [Slash/NC-17] by Aithine

Great characterization aside, it's the kind of fic that makes you believe that Shep and Rodney would really take an opportunity to do each other. It's a fun fic, with humor and a good dose of the good sexin.

Mostly Harmless [Slash/R] by Shalott

It's a First Contact challenge story and it's so frickin hilarious. They go to a planet, they get attacked by puffballs. It's very wrong in the head in an extremely enjoyable way. You'll laugh, I promise ;-)

Lux, Lumen [Gen/PG] by Salieri

It's a First Contact challenge story and just one of the coolest things I've ever read. The language, the description is beautifully and evocative and the plot itself is a brilliant take on the first contact idea. There some fab lines in this fic that will stick with you after you've read it.

Nonlinear Progression [Slash/R] by Greensilver

This fic has Rodney/Carson and Shep/Rodney, but the focus is Rodney's feelings towards Carson and I really liked this because Rodney seems to create a very complicated little affair for himself while trying not to complicate things. I don't generally like Carson/Rodney, but I really did enjoy this one. I especially enjoyed Rodney in this.

Tempus Fugit [Gen/PG-13] by Canadian Snoopy

This is set after the episode The Siege: II. To say too much about the fic would spoil it, but it's a clever little piece about Rodney. All I can say is that I loved the characterization and the overall structure and plot of the fic. I think it was very finely executed. Definitely worth a read.

The Crane Wife [Gen/PG-13] by Mz. B. Stone

Lyrical. Beautiful. Poignant. Moving. Original. It's just a fantastic piece of writing. Not everyone can write a fic that makes you care about people other than the main characters of your show, but this fic does it wonderfully. I've never seen the delicacy of a character come through in someone's fic before, but here, it was right there and it was just great. Do not pass this fic up.

First Contact [link 2] [Slashy/PG] by Kylie Lee and The Grrrl

This is for the First Contact challenge and the Atlanteans make first contact with an octopus. That's all you need to know because it's clever and funny. The funny is hella funny and the clever is very clever. I loved the plot - Sci-Fi dudes, Sci-Fi. The boy-kissing was good too.

Lost [Slasy/PG] by Merry

Remember the Stargate SG-1 episode Crystal Skull? Yeah, like that, only with Rodney doing the disappearing. I like that Merry gets the sense of dislocation and fading across so well, when Rodney's out of phase. A good fic that stings in the right places.

Science Geeks [Slash/NC-17] by Kylie Lee

It's Radek/Rodney fic. Kylie Lee is another author that I'd hate if I didn't always end up enjoying her fic so much. Radek Zelenka is just so hilarious in this fic. The characterization is perfect as is Rodney's. The humor is just brilliant and she really makes you see this pairing and believe it. I enjoyed this a lot.

Distance from Isolation [Slash/R] by Chelle

I've read all of Chelle's SGA fics, but for some reason, this was my favorite of the lot. I love all of her fics, but this is my favorite because for such a short piece (and it's really short), it presents you with a much bigger story. I had secretly hoped it would turn into something bigger. But as it is, it's a brilliant short. Short and sharp; I love that.

Souvenir [Slash/NC-17] by Miss Pamela [currently offline]

Rodney and John get shore leave and visit Earth. We see how John spends his shore leave and it takes you no time to realise that Earth isn't home anymore. I loved how unfulfilled he came across and it did a good job of making the parallel of a soldier returning from war, finding nothing much to make him want to stay. Rodney and John are both great in this fic, but it was the treatment of Shep that made me get glowy on the story. There was also sex and it was *very* good. Seriously, some of the best fic sexin I've read.

We All Arrive By Different Streets [Slash/NC-17] by The Grrrl

Rodney finds out Shep is gay and develops feelings for him. Shep however is less than receptive because of his own hangups. The Grrrl's knack for characterization and superb story-telling aside, it's Shep's inner conflict that really grabs you here. Rodney is quick to accept his new found feelings, yet Shep is the one struggling with this part of his identity. I just loved the realism of the situation. Masterfully done.

Triptych [Slash/Het/R] by Alyse

I think I've mentioned on numerous occasions that I'm not overly fond of the threesome (methinks the lady doth protest too much) and how every now and then, someone comes along and writes a really good one. This is one of the good ones. It's John/Weir/Rodney, captured, in a cell and trying to be discreet about it. It's needy and desperate and I loved the angsty nature of it and the feeling that this could never happen outside these circumstances. Yep, one of the good ones.

Sexual Tension [Slash/PG-13] by Nixa Jane

This is a very funny little fic where Rodney makes a proposition and John reacts in an adorably, yet, characteristically funny fashion. What I really like about this fic is that it stays very true to character despite the fact that we'll never actually see Rodney hit on John. I know, what a crime.

Six Degrees of Transformation [Slash/NC-17] by Nel

This is one of my favorite John/Rodney fics ever (in my top five actually). It has two very cool plots and brilliant character voices, fast pacing and great John/Rodney. It's one of those fics you read and wish you'd had the idea first. A pant-wettingly good read. One of the best SGA fics you'll read. She has an idea for a sequel, but doesn't want to write it. Seriously, nag her.

If There Be Thorns [Slash/NC-17] by Shalott

If There Be Thorns is actually a sequel to Julad's Beneath The Roses, which you should probably read it first. This sequel begins with John making the rash decision to kiss Rodney who is involved with Zelenka and then we get a monitor melting threesome. I really don't go for threesome fics. Once in a blue moon, someone will write one that I actually like and this was one of them. Also, there were some nice character moments in the fic, especially to do with Sheppard, and those moments made this fic better than just really good pornos ;-)

Figuring Out the Situation [Slash/NC-17] by The Grrrl

John, Rodney, naked, in a birdcage, written by The Grrrl. You don't really need anymore information than that. But, I shall go on and say it's as to be expected with The Grrrl; a fic that's funny, silly, sweet and yet, she nails the voices and gives us the characters we love. It's why every time I watch the show, I expect Rodney and John to sneak off to make out.

Controverted [Slash/PG-13] by Shalott

Did I mention how much I love post-Sanctuary fic, because I do. That episode is the defining slash episode of the show. Why the hell is Rodney *so* angry ;-)

What I love about this fic is that it's realistic, yet quite warm and funny too. I love that in fic. Rodney hits on Shep, Shep is in shock that Rodney thought he was gay and the fic unfolds along from there, with a bit of post-Sanctuary jealousy thrown in and all the time, great characterization. I loved this one.

Damage Control [Slash/NC-17] by Kageygirl

After post-Sanctuary fic, I think post-The Siege II fic is my next favorite. My thoughts on what the reactions towards Shep's return would be like are mixed, but Kageygirl really makes you believe and feel the emotional turmoil here. You really feel for Rodney and Shep and I like fics that make me read it and believe it. It's something Kageygirl's very good at.

Left Behind [Slash/Het/NC-17] by Miera

This is one of my favorite SGA fics. It's very angsty and set in the future, after Rodney, Shep and Weir have returned to Earth. It's about the way they cope, and specifically about the way Shep copes with events that happened on Atlantis. Because the fic has Rodney/Shep and Weir/Shep, I wasn't sure if I'd buy the nature of their relationships, but it's handled amazingly well. One of my all time favorites.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (give or take) [Slash/NC-17] by Merry

Written for the Enclosed Spaces challenge for Sga Flashfic, this is one of those true gems of SGA fic. Funny, snarky and hot. The John/Rodney is just beautiful and the plot fun. I enjoyed this so much with one hysterical moment after the other. It's good to see this fandom is attracting some cool writing talent.

Environmental Controls [Pre-Slash/PG-13] by Kalimyre

This series has been going on for a while, but what really made me go back and read it properly was the last installment, Fire, which was the best of the lot. It's a great fic with a slow build up of frisson between John and Rodney that, I think, culminates in a lovely and satisfying ending.

The X Factor [Slash/NC-17] by Kageygirl

It's not right that a fic that only amounts to 10KB should manage to be so good. It should just be a PWP that you read and don't think about. But dudes, Kageygirl has a way of writing John/Rodney that makes you care about whatever these characters are thinking. Sure it's Rodney doing Shep in a jumper, but somehow it's way more than that. I guess it's the thing that separates the good slash from the bad. Just read everything this author writes. I can't imagine you ever being disappointed.

Counterpoint [Slash/Het/R] by Alyse

I find it odd I didn't rec this fic straight away because I've had it bookmarked since it was posted and I've read it so many times that I distinctly remember that Sam Carter reminds Rodney of the sky and John Sheppard reminds him of the Earth. This is Rodney and how he thinks of Sam and John and their differences. It's short, insightful and incredibly touching somehow. I would have recced it ages ago, but whenever I begin to write a rec, I end up reading it instead.

Transcendental [Slash/NC-17] by Shalott

Fantastic story. There's nothing better than a slash fic that has plot. Actually, there is. It's a plot fic that has slash, which is what Transcendental is. The John/Rodney of this fic have a very intense and complicated relationship, which sets the fic apart from other John/Rodney stories and that's why I liked it.

Geek and Goons Series [Slash/Various Ratings] by Likethekoschka

A a series of fics fun, slashy stories. They all have some geek/goon plot going on with John and Rodney at the forefront, steeped in their coupledom. Very fun. fluffy and mostly light hearted stories to come back to again and again.

Some Element of Repetition [Gen/G] by EllieV

Not many Ford fics out there, or at least, not many that are worth checking out. This fic takes place after Hot Zone and Ford contemplates his place in the scheme of things. Good, strong Ford characterization. Nice Shep/Ford interaction too. Definitely worth checking out.

This Is Fact, Not Fiction [Het/R] by Tahlia

It's Shep/Weir smut, but damn it, it's good Shep/Weir smut. It's good smut because it's well-written and perfectly believable and when you can get that kind of writing, who needs an OTP?

- Incipit - Begin Here - [Slash/R] by Otter

This is the best Rodney/Radek fic I've ever read. Sure, there haven't been many, but I think if I'd read a ton of them, this would still be the best. It's funny, sweet and the characterizations are horribly perfect. It's a post-The Siege fic, but it doesn't spoil anything. It centers more on the R/R relationship. Highly recced.

The Secret Life of Scientists [Slash/PG-13] by Julad

I think I previously recced this an 'interesting fic' and while giving the recs page a quick look, I have to say I feel like I short changed the fic by reccing it as merely 'interesting'. It's the first Radek/Rodney I read and I do recall an intense jealousy over Julad's writing style and storytelling skills in this fic. I still think this fic will appeal to some more than others, but there's no doubt that it's worth reading for the writing alone.

Referencing Gilbert Ryle [Slash/PG-13] by Brighid [offline]

It's beautifully written, but then that's Brighid for you; everything has that touch of poetry to it. It's a very cool John/Rodney, with Rodney and John temporarily housing someone else's personalities. It's through these two people that they discover their own feelings towards each other. It's sad at times and other times it's very sweet and warm. Great characterizations throughout the fic and you'll read it more than once.

Against the Dying [Slash/PG-13] by Sage

It's the only Carson/Rodney fic I've enjoyed so far. Both characterizations are spot on and the relationship between the two unfolds very naturally and in a believable manner. Also, they're both so utterly lovely together in this fic. Really, it's the best Carson/Rodney fic I've ever read.

Proof by Contradiction [Slash/R] by Shalott

Perfection. This story is complete and utter perfection. John and Rodney are so adorably perfect in this. You'll want to read it again right after the first time. I want to say more, I want to wax poetic, but all I can do is squee. SQUEEEEEEEE!!!

Nothing Besides Remains [Slash/NC-17] by Kageygirl

It's post-The Brotherhood fic and it's angsty, hot, John/Rodney. It's just amazing in its intensity with John and Rodney dealing with the impending Wraith incursion in the only way they can; with a sense that time is running out. Really, this one is just fucking brilliant, especially for a fic of its short length. More like this, please!

Post–1.11 "The Eye" Quadrilogy [Gen/PG] by Miera

Four short pieces on how everyone deals with the events of The Eye. I think after the events of that episode, it would have been nice to see some kind of resolution that wasn't as light-hearted as the actual ending of the episode. The fic provides a nice bit of closure to that episode with the characters seeking comfort in each other after what's happened and some lovely insights into their psyches. My favorite piece was on Shep of course ;-)

Thy Rodney and Thy Staff They Comfort Me [Gen/PG] by Sage

This fic isn't a new one, it's been around a while and I can't believe I only just read it. It's really quite the hidden gem. It's a beautiful look into Ford's head and the author really nails his character (so rare to find good Ford fic). The rest of the SGA characters are just as believable, but you're made to feel especially receptive towards Ford as the reality of being away from home sets in. It's just a fantastic piece of writing.

Apoapsis [Slash/PG] by Sin

I love this story. Sin has a very cool style of writing, something that just makes me very comfortable when I read her fic. This isn't a new fic, I just happened to find it late. It has John developing an attraction to Rodney and not really understanding why or where it comes from. I thought she really got into his head and made it work. Brilliant fic.

Too Much [Het/PG-13] by The Moonmoth

I love this fic. It's short, yet very powerful. It takes place after Letters From Pegasus and looks at how John deals with the impending battle against the Wraith. It's a Teyla/Shep fic and it's just cool to find a good story with this pairing. The characterizations were completely believable and you really do sympathize with John who seems to feel out of his depth. Read it. It's fantastic.

Scar Tissue [Slash/NC-17] by Coreopsis

I loved this fic to bits. I liked the characterizations and the way you could see Rodney's insecurities without him being a little girly mess. His fixation with John's scar was possibly much more erotic than any smut-filled fic I've read (don't me get wrong, I have a lot of respect for the smut too). This is a sequel to Hello Timebomb, which I didn't like on a first reading, but bizarrely, quite liked after I read Scar Tissue. So yeah, read both, but read Hello Timebomb a second time, after you've read Scar Tissue. That way, it reads different somehow. Okay, maybe I'm just a big weirdo. But yeah, definitely read them both.

Verb, Transitive [Slash/NC-17] by Kageygirl

Excellent piece of writing based around the concepts of lose/loose. What I liked mostly was that the characterizations were very true of Shep and Rodney. People concentrate a lot on re-creating the snark of the show (myself included) and I think they don't explore the more subtler aspects of the characters enough. Kageygirl does this here, very aptly. I shall not sit here and simmer with envy.

The Years And The Stories They Leave [Slash/PG-13] by Counterfeit

Read it; it's only 3KB long. It's a Ford/Rodney fic and so far it's the only one I've actually liked. Maybe because it's short, it doesn't really have space to go wrong, but I liked the characterizations and the way it opens with Rodney wondering what's happened to the people he and Ford have left behind. I won't spoil much more, since it's very short, but really, it's worth reading. Yeah, I really liked it.

Empirical Evidence [G] by Kageygirl

This fic is brilliant for one reason; perfect characterization. The snark and the voices are just perfect. You can actually hear the characters speaking. And the ending is lovely; simple yet extremely touching. It's the kind of McShep I like; all about the words.

Refraction [Slash/R] by Kageygirl

I can't believe this fic almost passed me by. It's the perfect antidote to those fics that imply Rodney is some kind of blushing virgin. It's also known as Five Sexual Encounters Rodney McKay Did Have, which pretty much sums up the plot. Each piece is perfect with great characterization and interaction and the last piece is just... w00t! Really, read it. When the sequel is up on her site, consider it recced because it's just as good.

Fucking Right [Slash/NC-17] by Amireal

Have I mentioned there's just not enough post-Sanctuary fic? Actually, there could be a million and that just wouldn't be enough for me. This one is *so* very sexy. Great John/Rodney voices too. Definitely worth a read.

Cherry [Slash/NC-17] by Rivier

Very enjoyable Shep/Rodney fic that manages to stay in character and be very funny, sweet and surprisingly hot in some places. It's also quite a feel good fic set at Christmas time. Warm and sweet without being sappy. Read it.

As You Wish [Slash/R] by Nel

Nel wrote this fic for me as a Christmas gift, which as you can imagine I am well chuffed about. It's a very funny clichefic with some great John/Rodney snarking and characterization.

Pulling Back by Kylie Lee

The thing about this fic is that it's a Carson/Halling fic and despite the fact that I'm not really interested much in either of those characters, it's a completely compelling read. I loved its exploration of the cultural differences between the two characters and the ramifications of a relationship. It was an oddly touching fic and I'm glad I read it. It's a part of Courtship Ritual, so you might want to check that out the whole series.

Sympathetic Magic [Het/R] by Nostalgia

It's Sheyla fic. It's a gem because a) there aren't enough good Sheyla fics and b) there aren't enough clever ones. On the surface it's Teyla and Shep doing sex, but underneath it questions what sex means to different people and the attached expectations. At the same time it also has John asking the question of how much he really knows Teyla. Good characterization and cool plot. Read it, definitely.

What Sheppard Thinks [Slash/NC-17] by Nemo

Very short/sweet fic. What I particularly liked was the idea that Shep has all these preconceptions and Rodney always ends up proving him wrong, much to Shep's liking. Like I said, it's short, it's sweet and it's in character. Lovely *g*

Owl Eyes [Gen/Pre-Slash/PG-13] by Salieri

This is a fantastic story. The one thing that disappoints me about fic in the SG fandom is the lack of actual Sci-Fi plot in some stories. This one's got Sci-Fi, action, horror and excellent characterization. There's not a single character that will irritate you or feel out of place. And though it's more pre-slash, there's great John/Rodney.

Yes, Yes, A Thousand Times Yes [Slash/NC-17] by The Grrrl

Do I get sick of reccing The Grrrl? Only if I got sick of reading her fics. She just has such a knack for this fandom, it's enviable. It's an unmissable episode tag and must be read. John/Rodney at its sizzling best. Really, just fantastic.

And Think Of England [Het/R] by Nostalgia

This is a Shep/Weir fic and so far it's probably my favorite one. It goes for a harsh fucked upness over happy endings with religious orgasms. Weir is complicated and Shep is there for her to use as necessary. Believable and readable.

Acts of Enormity [Slash/R] by Leah

Very fast paced and very dramatic. I usually hate fics that explore the bad childhood a character might have had (y'know, Daniel had all the bad foster parents), but Leah created a believable childhood that fits McKay. A lot of nice moments in it too.

Five Ways John Sheppard Gets Laid [Slash/R] by Dirty Diana

Shepwhore has become such a happily accepted notion and there's nothing greater than a fic where we get to see him doing it with as many people as we can imagine. Funnily, this fic is nowhere as porny as you'd expect from the title. Five very character driven and insightful snippets actually.

Invulnerable [Slash/NC-17] by Kylie Lee

This fic is just brilliant. McKay's voice is dead on in this fic. It also ties in parts of some episodes from the show, especially Rodney's temporary invulnerability, which has wider meaning here. But damn it, this fic is just so incredibly sexy, while never having the characters be anything but themselves. Excellent fic. So recced.

Festivities [Slash/NC-17] by The Grrrl

When The Grrrl writes new fic, I can truly say I look forward to it. She has a good handle on Shep and McKay and always writes a read-worthy fic. This one uses the old 'aliens made us do it' idea to great effect. There's humor, it's sweet and most importantly, you recognize the characters as being themselves. Just bookmark her site, dudes.

Textbook Example [Slash/NC-17] by Nel

This fic is special in the fact that I actually quite dislike threesome fics and only read them on rare occasion because the author has actually convinced me of the possibility. This one is Shep/McKay/Ford and it's funny, funny, funny. Good character voices and great lines. And they do sex, which even vanilla me read happily.

Stoned and Dethroned [Slash/PG] by Munchkinott

It's Shep/McKay. Very funny fic. Cute too, without being a schmoopfest. The character voices hit the mark and it's just mostly very enjoyable, happy reading, which involves Shep and Rodney all shagged out.

Bright Ideas [Slash/R] by Alyse

It's the best kind of short fic. Sheppard and McKay, on the run from natives. Shep is battered and McKay is whining and there's tension. On top of that there's bad weather. With that, there are good character voices and a nice short sharp ending. I enjoyed it very much indeed.

Credentials [Slash/NC-17] by The Grrrl

Love it, love it, love it! It's a Rodney/Sheppard piece with some great characterization. It's funny, sexy and very entertaining to read. One of the better Shep/McKay fics out there.

Even The Wicked [Slash/NC-17] by Sage

You'd think it was too early for a little angst, but this fic proved me wrong. Actually, there was some great Rodney angst in there. All character voices were perfect and there's some great character interaction too. Loved the Rodney snark. Shep and Rodney also done sex, which is kewl. Very enjoyable fic.

Seven Ways John Sheppard Goes Home [Gen/PG-13] by Minnow

This has been the best Stargate Atlantis fic I've read so far (and I've gluttoned on as many as I can find). In seven short pieces, Minnow explores the possible ways John could go back to Earth, each one brilliant and one of them enough to move you to tears. Excellent stuff.
