Stargate SG-1 Recs

Concentric Unto Thee [Het/NC-17] by Gabolange

Stories like this make me adore the SG-1 fandom. Very often, we like our OTPs so much that any other pairing seems unlikely to impress. However, Gabolange writes a fantastic and sensitive Jack/Sam piece here, one that explores the difficulty of a relationship that almost seems built on compromise. The ending is especially wonderful and warm and I love that this story made me so happy for the pairing.

The God of Poets Has Two Hands [Gen/PG] by Minxy

I admit to not reading a lot of SG-1 fic these days (or even SGA for that matter), but this one made me glad I decided to click on the fic link. It's like reading a tale about the building of tales. A song about songs. Songs about people, heroes and legends. It's a wonderful concept for framing a story about Bra'tac and Teal'c, two heroes of songs to come. I fell in love with it the moment I started reading it. Lovely.

I Might And You Might [Slash/NC-17] by Minervacat

I do like a good Cameron/Sheppard fic, but I've never really read one I completely believed or liked. This one is set during the episode The Pegasus Project and I really liked the chemistry here and the fact that we get to see how distinctly different these two flyboys are and how similar. Plus, omg hot.

Paris is Burning (Five Ways Daniel Jackson Says Yes) [Slash/NC-17] by Dirty Diana

Dirty Diana gives good Dan/Cam. Seriously. Write it on all the fannish spaces. I'm not a Daniel/Cameron shipper, but I do love it when this author posts a fic with those two characters. As ever, in this fic, I can completely hear the voices and see the characters. I especially like Cameron in this one.

Walk On Water [Slash/NC-17] by Dirty Diana

I'm still trying to fight the Cameron/Daniel thing hard because I honestly don't see it or feel it. However, this story is one of those fics that is so good it makes you see the ship on screen. It's from Cameron's point of view and I thought his characterization was spot on. I honestly loved this story despite the fact that it's not a slash pairing I really like.

Cascade [Slash/NC-17] by Kylie Lee

Still not reading as much SG fic as I used to. Two pages of Atlantis fics are proof of this. However, every now and then there's a single fic that reminds why I'm still watching the show. Cascade is one of these fics. It's Daniel/Cameron, a pairing that I'm not even interested in. Still, I read this with absolute glee. It's a great fic, with great plot, great characterizations and a totally believable chemistry between Daniel and Cameron. I especially liked Daniel in this because he was a very grown up Daniel and one we've become more familiar with since season seven. I love fics that bother to take in the character changes and simultaneously remind me that I still love these characters. Excellent fic.

Driving to Drown [NC-17] by Tafkar

It's a dark, dark fic. It's not the kind of fic you should read because you're looking for some good easy porno or a fluffy afternoon. It's very unsettling and very dark. But it's a fantastic piece of writing. Tafkar explores what happens when Daniel is made host to Apophis instead of Sha're being host to Amaunet (she becomes a member of SG-1 instead). It's a brilliant look at how Apophis begins to bleed through into Daniel's mind and I couldn't help thinking that maybe when the Goa'uld say, 'nothing of the host remains', possibly this is what they mean. Amazing fic.

Two Sides of the Coin [SLASH/NC-17] by Dith

It's a Jack/Daniel novel with both guys stranded offworld without a Stargate. Daniel deals with Shifu's messing with his head and Jack deals with his attraction for Daniel. That's the plot, but who cares because you'll be too busy lost in the lush descriptive nature of the story. So much detail and so a whole of lot emotion. It's a brilliant read.

A Jack Tale [PG] by Sef

It's Jack's last mission with SG-1 before he takes on the duties of general. This blew me away. It's so lovely, sweet and touching the way the team is with each other and the warmth you get for them from Jack. I doubt there will be a single person that doesn't let out an 'awww' after reading it. Really, it's SG writing at its finest.

Winter Gifts [Ship/NC-17] by Tafkar

Oh my god, it's hetero fic, it's Sha're/Daniel and it's hot. Even more amazing is the fact that Sha're comes across as strong and vibrant and humorous and it feels real and believable. Tafkar's charazterization of Sha're is refreshing as is the playful and passionate relationship between her and Daniel. This is one of the better Sha're/Daniel fics I've read (probably the best one judging by the fact that it's the only one I've ever recced.

Twenty-Nine [SLASH/PG-13] by Destina

Lovely Jack/Daniel fic, which is funny and sweet and has all of SG-1 in character (and quite lovable I might add). The thing that stands out the most about this fic is that it's so the characters we know from the show and that's a rare thing to find in fanfiction. It'll make you squee.

This Day In History [SLASH/NC-17] by The Grrrl

Without a doubt, The Grrrl is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. As with most fics, she has a knack for nailing her characters dead on and when her characters are nailing each other, she has a knack for making it sexy, believable and re-readable. This fic is a short J/D, with perfect characterisation and sex of the sexy variety and not of the hitting your back button variety (you know the kind I mean).

Willemakee [SLASH/NC-17] by Mary Jane

I think more than anything, I hate this story because it was successful in making me feel quite sad, and it's very rare that a fic will move me to that extent. It wasn't just 'meh' sad either. It was, 'oh dear lord' sad. Think stake in the heart. It's a very good story. You want to learn how to write? Read this.

Serpentine [SLASH/NC-17] by Widget

This is one of the best fics in this fandom. Ever. I'm not a big fan of AUs because to really make them work, you have to convince the reader that X, Y, Z could happen and ninety percent of the time, writers fail to do that. Widget does not. She's masterfully crafted a story here that takes our favorite characters, with their recognisable backgrounds and histories, and places them in the plot of the movie Notorious. It's so believable that I was just blown away by it. Serpentine is definitely the hidden gem of this fandom.

Incommensurate [SLASH/NC-17] by Otter

I'm not reccing much at the moment out of pure laziness and simply lack of time. Which is what makes this fic special. I have to rec it. I recommend that you read everything by this author. She's never written anything that isn't worth a second, third or even fourth read. Incommensurate is my favorite fic by Otter, so far. It's Jack and Daniel having a tryst. A beautifully crafted relationship between the characters and an unexpected ending.

After Words by Tallulah Rasa

A future fic. Quite sad and very moving as it tells us what's happened to SG-1 in the future. Not what you'd expect. Very good fic.

Bright Chains [Slash/NC-17] by Destina

A sensitively written fic that takes a tired old fanfic cliche and turns it into something that's more emotionally fraught and moving. Oddly pleasurable and painful at the same time to read. The Jack/Daniel relationship is beautifully played out; subtle and quite tender. Actually, it's canon that includes good old m/m sex scene ;-) My favorite fic by Destina.

A Thousand Words For Oops [SLASH/NC-17] by Teand

Hilarious read where everyone still manages to be in character. It's the old master/slave slash cliche re-written with Jack as slave for a change. Like Road Trip where Jack is the one kidnapped, in A Thousand Words For Oops, it's Jack who's the slave. Fresh and as funny as fuck.

Road Trip [SLASH/NC-17] by Teand

Road Trip is another one if the BEST fics I have EVER read. A simple plot. Jack is kidnapped from his doorstep and the only person that can help Daniel find him is Maybourne. The fic takes us in pursuit of Jack and his kidnapper, followed by Maybourne and Daniel, followed by Sam and Teal'c. Along the way we have delicious flashbacks to Jack's younger days, we have funny Teal'c/Sam ship, Daniel simmering in his tight jeans and T-shirt and Maybourne being adorable as possible a weasel can be. It was well plotted, plausible, all the characterisations were spot on. A feel good fic that will make you laugh out loud.

T-Minus Ten and Counting [SLASH/NC-17] by Teand

Spot on humor, very snarky Jack and Daniel interaction, some great one-liners and one of the best Jack characterisations I've read. An added bonus comes in the roles that Janet, Sam and Teal'c play in the fic. It's good to see these characters being used in a positive way. A fun story to read with some intensely sexy J/D moments. The conclusion to the story was hysterically funny and it's one of the few fics that even though there's a whole lot of silly stuff going on, you find yourself believing every word of it.

System of a Down [SLASH/R] by M

This fic speculates on Daniel's return from the Ascended. The return is problematic and I loved that because one thing that irritates me in some fic is that seldom people delve into potential problems. I loved the originality of it. It explores the extent of the change in terms of what happens when you change from X to Y and then are turned back from Y to X, by which point X can't be as it used to be. No, I'm not talking about frozen peas, though the analogy would fit. Things can't change from one state of existence to another and then back without losing something, is the gist. And Daniel's change is twofold. Human to Ascended and then back to human. This fic looks at it brilliantly.

Driftwood [SLASH/PG-13] by Dale Edmonds [offline]

Driftwood is set after the episode The Light and is a piece where instantly you are drawn into the story. What drew me to it especially was the different telling of the tale. The norm for slash seems to be Daniel and Jack in a relationship, Daniel having some kind of emotional breakdown and Jack trying to coax him out. This fic had a very fresh spin. Or perhaps it feels fresh because it lacks the tweeness of so much of the J/D fics out there. It's very much an insight into Jack's thoughts about how he feels about his relationship with Daniel; his thoughts on how he would feel if suddenly Daniel, who is accustomed to loss and bereavement, died or disappeared. As usual it was the characterisation that made me want to read on.

Crossroads [SLASH/PG-13] by Zillah

It's a great piece of writing. I like the way it starts out, kind of setting the scene that Daniel and Jack are in their established routine (even if it is just the routine of sleep). The fic is mostly Daniel introspection, but I love the substance of it. Too often Stargate fic likes to ignore that Sha're ever happened. Some fic goes as far as denying there was any kind of love at all. This deals with Daniel trying to move on from having loved Sha're and to being in love with Jack. It's like an emotional schizophrenia where he's splitting between loving or forgetting them both. A well written fic, very thoughtful and really does hold your attention.

Dreams and Fables [SLASH/NC-17] by The Wild Mole

I loved Dreams and Fables. Great piece of writing. It's a post Crystal Skull fic and I'm sure it's not the only one. It's a common idea. Daniel was out of phase and now he needs to 'feel' normal again. It's a slash fic so Jack obviously makes Daniel feel normal again. Both Jack and Daniel in character and recognizable as the people on the show (with the exception that they have sex here - it's aaaalll good). It's a short fic, devoid of sappy soggy things that make some of us hit the back button. Thoroughly recommended.

Out of Season [SLASH/NC-17] by Anna

Out of Season sticks very close to the canon events of 100 Days and Shades of Grey and weaves in the Jack and Daniel relationship masterfully. It starts with Jack returning from Edora and ends with post-Shades of Grey events. It's so plausible, so realistic that if anyone had only ever seen Shades of Grey and then read this fanfic, they could be completely convinced that Jack and Daniel were involved.

The characterisations were excellent. I've never seen *anyone* write Jack that good. Anna really gets into his head. Both Jack and Daniel have just been lifted from the show and put into this story. Out of Season is believable, perfectly characterised and holds your attention from beginning to end.

To Drive The Cold Winter Away [PG] by Thevetia

To Drive The Cold Winter Away sees Jack and Daniel going to see Jack's family for x-mas. I was in potential sap mode when I began to read it. You know, happy family, cutesy slash and nothing to get down about. So not right on that count. I loved To Drive The Cold Winter Away for being slightly more realistic and unafraid to tread the 'in real life, shit happens' path rather than X-mas slush. I also appreciated that the J/D relationship didn't run the usual conclusion. I really enjoyed this fic. It was very different to the usual stuff, which is welcome in a fandom where people tend to write and re-write the same ole same ole, over and over.

Scratch [SLASH/NC-17] by Anais [offline]

Remember how you bitched during season four? All that 'what's happened to Jack and Daniel?'. Well, Anais masterfully weaves the downturn in the relationship here. She shows a post Nemesis Daniel as being isolated from his friends having lost out on a bonding experience. And during this lonliness and time of need, he latches on to Paul. This is a very intense and angst laden fic, but utterly engrossing.

Five Moons [Slash/PG-13] by Destina

Excellent fic. The dialogue was snappy, it flowed and most importantly it was engaging. But best of all, it was completely and utterly in character. What gets me is the resolution. It's intelligent, clever, believable and emotional. Five Moons was just astounding in its weaving of complexity and simplicity. Above it appears to be a harmless talk fic that uses UST in a deft manner, but underneath it displays all the fears and needs of the two main characters.

Esprit de Corps [Slash/PG-13] by Quercus

What I loved about this fic was that is was a very unconventional slash fic. I find a lot of J/D fics seem to feminize Daniel beyond belief and make Jack into a neantherdal man. In this I found Jack to be very likable, funny and not a complete idiot. Daniel was very much the way we've seen him on the show. For me that's great because I just dread reading SG fic in case he suddenly sprouts a uterus and breasts.

Dr. Jackson's Diary [SLASH/NC-17] by Anais [offline]

Dr Jackson's Diary is brilliantly funny. It's a take on Bridget Jones Diary gags come just as thick and fast. Anais is the first person who has made Major Paul Davis seem interesting to me. Even the actual show didn't manage that. Great read. Check it out. You'll be hooked.

Battlefields [GENERAL/PG-13] by Ellen Caldera

The plot involves Daniel going missing for nine days. When he is found, it emerges that he was imprisoned for war crimes and has earned the name the 'The Butcher'. There's a hint of the epidsode Legacy here, but nothing major. What I like about this fic is the way Daniel's characterisation swings between circumstantial psychosis and the character we see on telly. It's a great plot and there's an equally great climax to the story.

Heir To A Legacy: The Inheritance [GENERAL/G] by Yuma

This is a post Legacy tag and it's fantastic. It deals with the issue of why Jack was so unemotional in the hospital and it deals with Daniel's recovery from not only Machello's 'landmines' but from the experience of being incarcerated. A short fic and well worth a look.
